Basic reference for Latino stereotypes

Has a very good explanation for the origin of the latino stereotypes in Hollywood films, and may apply also for mainstream tv series and other kind of audiovisual productions. Used it for a recent stereotype study in American and Colombian tv series and helped a lot to also understand what Latino images are being adopted by foreign filmmakers.

Just as Reel Bad Arabs, this book looks deep into media bias when it comes to minorities. This particular book looks deep into Latino imgaes in cinema! So sad that a minority needs to be vilified so fil producers can make some money!

About the Author
Ondina E. Gonz�lez is visiting professor at Agnes Scott College and Emory University. She is co-editor of the forthcoming Raising an Empire: Children in Early Modern Iberia and Colonial Latin America.

Justo L. Gonz�lez has taught historical theology at various institutions, including Evangelical Seminary of Puerto Rico, Candler School of Theology at Emory University, and Columbia Theological Seminary. For the past thirty years, he has developed programs for the theological education of Hispanics. His numerous books on church history have been translated into several languages and are widely used throughout the world.

Great book

This was a great book and quite easy to read. The first half of the book deals with Christianity coming to Latin America and the Roman Church. While this part was interesting and has been covered by many people before so there was not that much new information although worth reading all the same. The second half dealt mostly with Protestantism and a very good chapter on Pentecostalism. This was very enlightening. The only downside about the book was that this second half was not longer with more information especially about the last 10 years or so (as this book was only published a couple of months ago). Apart from this it was a great read for anyone interested in Christian history or interested in global christianity from a non-European point of view.

Excellent history

Justo Gonzalez is best known for his two-volume "The Story of Christianity" and his three-volume "A History of Christian Thought." In "Christianity in Latin America" he and Ondina Gonzalez apply their skills as historians and story-tellers to create an easy-to-read and interesting yet meaty work on a topic that is often neglected. Many histories of Christianity give no more than a chapter to the history of Latin America. The Gonzalezes have admirably filled in the gap.

Beginning with a short introduction (that should not be overlooked, since it provides a brief overview of the main issues to be covered), "Christianity in Latin America" goes on to briefly describe the Latin America setting at the time when the first Europeans entered the land. There follows a discussion of the arrival of Christianity, how the faith was shaped by the institutional church, the religious orders, and so forth, the various reform movements in the church, the struggles within the church, and the church's role after Latin American became independent of Spain.

The part of the book is primarily about the Roman Catholic presence in Latin America. The rest of the book shifts to a discussion of the Protestant presence in Latin America, beginning with a description of the immigration from the Protestant areas of Europe as well as from North America, followed by a discussion of the Protestant missionaries to Latin America and the conflicts that resulted. The book then returns to a discussion of the effect of Vatican II on Latin American Catholicism and the rise of Pentecostalism and other movements in recent decades.

This is a must read for anyone interested in acquiring an overview of the history of the church in Latin America.

Covey author of "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" Unlike my book on the 7 Habits, this book by my son Sean speaks directly to teens in an entertaining and visually appealing style (and Sean, I never thought you listened to a word I said). As prejudiced as this may sound, this is a remarkable book, a must-read!

About the Author
Sean Covey works for FranklinCovey as Executive Vice President of Innovation and Products. He graduated with honors from BYU with a degree in English and later earned his M.B.A. from Harvard Business School. As the starting quarterback for BYU, he led his team to two bowl games and was twice selected ESPN Most Valuable Player. On the side, he likes to write books and is the author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens, The 6 Most Important Decisions You'll Ever Make, and The 7 Habits of Happy Kids. He lives in the Rocky Mountains in Utah with his wife Rebecca and their children. Sean's favorite pastimes include going to movies, working out, eating, and writing.

Should be required reading for all teens, SO GOOD.

My 15 year old daughter asked for this book for her birthday after studying it in one of her classes at school. I love giving a book at birthday and holiday and this one was worth every penny. She loves this book and reads it often. This is a must give book to your child of they have a personality that loves organization, leadership, social situations, business, and communication. She often references something she has read in the book with is. I very pleased.

Highly Recommended

I'm doing this as a class with my two early teen children. I wish I would have had someone to teach me these principles when I was their age. It has sparked great discussions in our home about being proactive (instead of reactive), living your principles, and having a balanced life. I purchased the workbooks for their private use as well. I think his writing is good for their ages and he uses a lot of stories to illustrate things and keeps their interest.
