Great book for psychiatry nursing, def. recommend!!

This is a great book for nursing psychiatric courses! I loved the organization of this book, the informative scenarios and the sidebar key ideas from the text page after page! I found the summaries at the end of the chapters to be extremely helpful and condensed yet effectively describing the chapter concisely enough without leaving open gaps. I recommend this book, the information is there, it's a great era even if you think you may not enjoy or be into psychiatry. It's an overall good read and helped me ace my exams!

When Adam Parfrey tracked down Walter Keane - the credited artist of the weepy waifs - for a San Diego Reader cover story in 1992, he discovered some shocking facts. Decades of lawsuits and countersuits revealed the reality that Keane was more of a conman than an artist and that he forced his wife, Margaret, to sign his name to her own paintings. As a result those weepy waifs may not have been as capricious an invention as they seemed.

Parfrey's story was reprinted in Juxtapoz magazine and inspired a Margaret Keane exhibition at the Laguna Art Museum. Director Tim Burton made a movie about the Keanes called Big Eyes, which came out in 2014.

Citizen Keane is a book-length expansion of Parfrey's original article, providing fascinating biographical and sociological details.

A Tremendous Story Of A Long Con, And How One Couple Changed Contemporary American Art History

I'd first read the almost unbelievable story of 1960s "Big Eye" artists Walter Keane and his wife Margaret in a great short expose by Adam Parfrey in the 90s, collected in the superb anthology Cult Rapture. It was a remarkable tale of art hustle and cultural chicanery, drawing on the energy of a certain kind of Mad Man and posing profound questions about what art means in the everyday lives of Americans. But the significance of the original report's twists and turns needed to be expanded, with greater contextualization, as it is more relevant now than ever. The book Citizen Keane: The Big Lies Behind the Big Eyes by Parfrey and Cletus Nelson deftly fills in all the outlandish details, updating the narrative of an art-making couple doomed by success, out of their time and yet so influential upon the world they lived in. If you go to "middle-brow" art shows these days and wonder what the attraction is to all those big eyed girls, and all those repeated tropes of consumerism and dark pop surrealist imagery, it all started with the Keanes. For better or worse; but you will be illuminated about modern illustration by reading this biography. A really nice selection of their (or rather, her) best artwork is published within as well. Highly recommended.

This enthralling and well written book blows the lid off this little known story of the creators of Kitsch.

The story is crazy! Walter Keane made his wife sign his name to her paintings and used her talent to gain fame while she was forced to stay home and paint crying children in the basement! The book tells of how Margaret Keane finally proved that she was the real artist and what followed after she finally got her dues. The book is the comprehensive story of the Keanes whose lives will play out on the big screen in Tim Burton's forthcoming Big Eyes out this winter.

The book includes tons of great art and photographs as can be expected from the wonderful Feral House Publishing.

Deeply Researched Facts behind the BIG EYES Story

This is the book to get if you are interested in the facts behind the BIG EYES story. CITIZEN KEANE provides deeply researched material based on multiple "Freedom of Information" requests, etc, and surfaces many fascinating details such as the abhorrent response of some members of the Art Department when Margaret was invited to speak to the Associated Women Students group at Stanford University. Kudos to the authors for providing the original article as well as first person reflections. Whether you liked her work or you didn't, what justifies such noxious behavior... and oh, by the way, can you imagine anyone ever doing something like this to a male artist? As the film BIG EYES clearly shows, Walter had hundreds of opportunities to "say his say" in print as well as on TV. So this is not a "He Said/She Said" story. This is a story of the perils of "Spin," because Parfrey & Nelson have finally outed him!

About the Author
Ann Gordon has been in the early childhood field for over 45 years as a teacher of young children, of parents, and of college students. She has taught in lab schools, church-related centers, and private and public preschool and kindergarten programs. While at Stanford, Ann was at the Bing Nursery School for 11 years and was a lecturer in the Psychology Department. For 10 years she also served as an adjunct faculty member in four colleges, teaching the full gamut of early childhood courses. Ann served as executive director of the National Association of Episcopal Schools for 14 years, where more than 1,100 early childhood programs were a part of her network. She is now consulting in the areas of early childhood curriculum governance and professional development.

Kathryn Williams Browne has been a teacher most of her adult life: a teacher of young children for nearly 20 years, a guide for parents of the families she served, and, more recently, a parent educator and an instructor of college students for more than 15 years. Her work with children includes nursery school, parent cooperatives, full-day child care, prekindergarten and bilingual preschools, and kindergarten and first grade. Kate's background in child development research led her to choose early childhood education. While a Head Teacher at Bing Nursery School and a lecturer with Stanford University, Kate developed a professional relationship with Ann Gordon that blossomed into work in teacher and parent education. Moreover, her role as a parent has influenced BEGINNINGS AND BEYOND: her two children were born during the first two editions, so the book grew along with them. Recent work as a consultant and public elementary school board trustee has offered Kate new perspectives on schools, reform, and collaboration. Working closely with her students while teaching in two community colleges over the last decade, she has gained constructive insights that inform this text in every revision.

Love this book!

I used this book in my very first college class for child development and I couldn't wait to have a copy of my own. I went on line searched for it on Amazon found it, ordered it and it was like brand new, I was so happy! I will be using this book regularly for good practices in my profession. I would tell anyone to order books through Amazon and it's seller they do a great job of getting the books to you in a timely manner and they are always in great condition. I'm a happy customer and will continue to order books.

Writing style is very confusing

I HATE this book. Here is an exact copy of a sentence from it: "It is called maturation because it sets out a sequence of cognitive (thinking) stages that is governed by heredity--how the body is structured biologically, with automatic (instinctive) behaviors such as an infant sucking at birth." I don't know if it's just me, but this book is soooo painful to read because the author slams WAY too much info into every sentence. The whole (thinking), --how the body is structured, (instinctive), such as an infant sucking at birth.....it's useless info, it distracts me from the main point. The author does this A LOT. Anytime a "big word" is used there's an explanation in parenthesis or an example after it. There's also a lot of sentences that just go on and on and on and I'm finding myself having to break it down to try to understand the main idea. For some people I guess it may be helpful to have the explanations like that but to me it's just confusing!!! I know what cognitive means, I know what heredity is, I know what automatic means, I know an example of an automatic behavior. I do not need to have all of these explained to me in one sentence, it's too much to try to focus on and I have to go back and weed out the useless information to get the main idea out of the sentence. When you're assigned to read about 50 pages a night for your class, there's no way I'm going to sit there and sift through everything to see what's important and what isn't. So, if you can easily weed out or skim over the extra info this book may be better suited for you, but if you're like me and need things to be straightforward and to the point, be warned.

Four and a half stars.

I really like this book. Had the author stopped at Chapter 19, I would have given it 5 stars. Honestly, 21-23 floundered and she seemed out of her depth. I think she could have taken highlights from those chapters and just added it to her "What Next" section. A number of statements not properly backed up with references to support the claims and so forth. That said, the book is very insightful and motivating. I have a number of highlights throughout and it has motivated me to continue my Feng Shui journey. As I am clearing my clutter, I am adding elements of Feng Shui as I go. I will definitely go back, once my house is finished and re-read the book entirely, or at least the highlighted areas. I have already recommended this book to friends.

I read the original long ago and have bought copies over the years as gifts. This time I sent the revised edition to a friend who is getting ready to move and needs support for getting rid of stuff! GREAT BOOK

In his intriguing book, Professor Friedrich G. Barth puts this technical perfection into the context of "biology", in which the interaction between environment and sensory organs and the selectivity of the senses as a link between environment and behavior play a major role. Professor Friedrich G. Barth was born in Munich, Germany, in 1940. He studied biology and human physiology in Munich and Los Angeles. In 1967, he obtained his doctorate under H. Autrum, 1970 he received his Habilitation in zoology. In 1974, he was offered a chair at the University of Frankfurt/M. Since 1987, he has been professor at the University of Vienna, Austria. His main areas of research are neurobiology, sensory systems, and biomechanics. He is a member of several scientific academies and editor-in-chief of the Journal of Comparative Physiology A.

A unique and valuable book on spiders

If you are interested in the biology of spiders, this is a terrific book. It is written at a level that makes it a useful introduction to research in spider biology (particularly sensory physiology) for scientists, but it also has much to offer the younger student who is beginning to learn about spiders. Although the focus of this book is on research related to relatively large "ctenid" spiders, the applicability is much more general. If you have a new pet "tarantula" (Theraphosidae) and want to learn more about it, this is a better starting place than most popular books on "tarantulas." Thus it has a place in both research libraries and public libraries.

I wish the price were not so high, but if you have a strong interest in really learning about spiders, this book is well worth the price. This thoughtful and comprehensive book can absorb your interest for a long time, and it will get you into the technical literature for even more information. The quality of writing, illustration, and presentation is outstanding.

This is very well written. The content is somewhat technical, but with a few exceptions it could be followed by anyone who has had some scientific education. It is not a light weight read, effort and thought are required, but for readers who are interested in spider biology, or how animals perceive their environment it is a first class book, albeit expensive.
