Not Nietzsche

This is a brilliantly written novel, that moves you along quickly. The characters are reasonably well described, although it is hard to understand how the protagonist could have been married 4 times - that idea is not developed well and only serves the somewhat cartoonish purposes of the author. The novel is pretentious, in the way of those long and entertaining college discussions and it is not clear what the point is, unless the point is the hoary existential premise that there is no point. So, as a self-important work of philosophy, it is sophomoric, but in a somewhat charming way. If you've enjoyed exploring the meaning of life with your peers, you'll enjoy this book. It's a good read, but don't take it too seriously - Don de Lillo writes well, but Nietzsche he ain't.

Occasionally brilliant, ultimately unsatisfying

I'm not sure what to think of Don DeLillo. White Noise, like Mao II, like Underworld, like End Zone, is a book bursting with ideas and observations about people, the world and modern life. And some of these observations will make you see things in a new way, or at least crystallize your thoughts so perfectly that you nod your head and say, "Yes, that's exactly what I think. Now why didn't I say it like that?" Well, because you're not Don DeLillo. So give the man credit, because that's something few people can do. At the same time White Noise shows up one of DeLillo's bigger flaws: he doesn't really create characters you care about, even a little bit. Indeed, in White Noise I'm sure he didn't want to. They're not real characters at all, only a group of signifiers and commenators who all speak with the same voice and even use the same expressions, whether they are ex-sportswriters, housewives, sulking teens, or nine-year-old girls. By page 300 this gets tiresome. Intellectual insights are more memorable when they are hung on interesting and engaging characters. So while I enjoyed White Noise and am impressed with the mind behind it, I found it ultimately unsatisfying.

My New Favorite Author

Somehow I missed Delillo along the way and discovered him through a review of his newest book "Zero K". Delillo writes the kind of prose that frequently makes you stop reading the passage so that you can return to savor it again. The book is laugh-out-loud funny (Check out the family trip yo the mall) but also profound and moving. I think I've found a new favorite author.

If anyone would have told me I would have enjoyed a book about athletic shoes I would have taken umbrage and considered them somewhat lacking in the gray matter area. How wrong I would have been! This book is a whole lot of fun. And no tongue in cheek here. Fun to reminisce about different athletic shoes by various manufacturers through the ages that most of us have worn or have at least been privy to seeing. The book does focus on the major brands like Nike, Reebok, Adidas, etc., but does also highlight and showcase other manufacturers and models of shoes. Heard is British, so some of the shoes probably were not available on this side of the Atlantic. A few of the shoes I wouldn't mind having now. Yo MTV Raps Big Daddy Kane shoes from Puma! What more could anyone ever ask for? Heard likes his shoes and it shows! Not sure I will cancel my membership in the New Balance owners' forum for Air Jordan 3s on eBay, but............ Fun book. Gr 3–5—Frederick Douglass's journey from slavery to international renown as writer and lecturer is broadly sketched here. Readers meet Douglass eye to eye as he gazes, serious and frowning, from a commanding portrait filling the entire front cover of the large square picture book. An unusual design choice places the title and creator names in bold text on the back cover. The poignant childhood years, some enjoyed and others endured, make for a touching, memorable story. About a third of the work is devoted to Douglass's adulthood. Emphasizing his role as a man of words, Rappaport includes frequent quotations. She focuses on Douglass's oratory and writing accomplishments but tells almost nothing of the man's personal life. In a rare specific example when she does, readers learn that Douglass's friends bought his freedom for $710.96. He went on to lecture in Great Britain and Ireland, started a newspaper, became friendly with Abraham Lincoln, and was involved with the Underground Railroad. Although the book features a concluding list of "Important Dates," Rappaport often neglects to mention where and when key events occurred: overall, this is a quick introduction accompanied by some striking visuals. Ladd casts a sepia glow in handsome scenes of key figures, and his illustrator's note adds a fun light on his painting of them. The many existing children's books about Douglass include works by well-known writers, some of which are included in the "Selected Research Sources" section. Beautifully Illustrated and Historically Informative

One of the really fun things about having kids in elementary school is re-living what I learned as a child. I always loved school and have always been an avid reader. I have to admit though, I've lost some of the information learned over the years and my memory is not what it used to be! I've found that reading history with my kids helps me remember all the details as well!

My kids haven't gotten to the life of Frederick Douglass yet but Frederick's Journey about his life was a great introduction and a great history re-cap for me!

My kids are six and seven and this book was designed for 6 - 8 year olds so it was perfect for them. I had my seven year old read it out loud to us as part of his required reading for homework.

The illustrations are beautiful and every single one looks like a work of art and is the perfect companion to the story. Once you are familiar with the story you could almost just retell it through the pictures without reading the words.

This is a man whose life is an incredible story of hope and perseverance. He is a success story of a man born a slave who suffered for years but because of his determination to learn to read, was able to successfully live as a free man. His life is an inspiration and the type I want my children to look to for inspiration.

My kids haven't learned about slavery yet so they had a lot of questions and it opened the door to some really interesting conversations. It's hard watching them learn about the ways of the world but it's a necessary evil. History is a part of the landscape of who we all are so it's important for it to be told.

Frederick's Journey is a great read, beautifully illustrated and historically informative.

Inspirational Nonfiction Picture Book

FREDERICK’s JOURNEY by Doreen Rappaport tells the inspirational true story of a slave boy who ultimately achieves freedom and spreads his abolitionist beliefs to promote change.

The author skillfully weaves together a nonfiction narrative that combines Douglass’ life story with excerpts from his writings and speeches. Amazing illustrations by London Ladd add to the power of this important story.

In addition to the narrative itself, the book also includes an Author’s Note, Illustrator’s Note, timeline, and sources.

The Big Words series is an excellent way to introduce youth to key historical figures. Librarians will find Frederick’s Journey to be an excellent addition. Consider creating a display that features this entire series. Incorporate a timeline that shows how the books are connected chronologically and thematically.

Beautiful, powerful, moving, sensitively told for children

Beautiful book and illustrations, excellent writing, and sensitive treatment of painful but important topics. We happened on this at the library and had to get our own copy. It's gorgeous. It was tricky to find on Amazon. That's a shame bc it should be widely read!

About the Author
Og Mandino is the most widely read inspirational and self help author in the world. Former president of Success Unlimited magazine, Mandino was the first recipient of the Napoleon Hill Gold Medal for literary achievement. Og Mandino was a member of the International Speakers Hall of Fame and honored with the Masters of Influence by the National Speakers Association. Og Mandino died in 1996 but his books continue to inspire countless thousands all over the world.

Exceptional. It should be required reading in middle school

This book was recommended to me by a friend. I picked it up, read it and shared it with another friend. I immediately went to the bookstore to purchase several other books written by Mandino. Easy, concise and motivational. Those are the three words I used to describe the book when I loaned it out. This was 3 weeks ago. Since that time several people have purchased some of his books via Amazon (unfortunately for me I discovered Amazon.com after I made my purchases!!) as well as at different bookstores. I will recommend this book to all of the young people I know. As a matter of a fact I may purchase duplicate copies and distribute them myself. I believe that this author can make tremendous differences in the lives of all people, particularily those young people that are confused, lost and feeling unimportant!! Thanks to Mandino for great literature!!

Interesting, but not groundbreaking

I'm not an expert on inspirational books. I read this because I love reading and I picked it up from my wife's grandmother's book collection when she passed away. Anyway, on to the review...
The story in the book is about a man named Zaccheus but is told from the perspective of his friend and confidant Joseph. Zaccheus is disfigured/crippled in the sense that he is extremely short because of his misshapen legs. He is also an orphan. But despite his trials in life he becomes the richest man in all of Jericho and possibly all of Israel. Joseph is kind of like his chief counselor.
The story is really a facade for the rules of success that Og Mandino wants to teach you. Near the end of the story - it took me about 30 minutes to read the entire book - the 10 rules to success (only 9 are listed initially but the 10th appears soon thereafter) are presented as entire chapters. The rules aren't really all that much to shout about, but I guess it could help some people so, here they are (simplified for you by me):
1. Work hard.
2. Be patient.
3. Set goals.
4. Plan on hard times.
5. Don't let the hard times get you down.
6. Dreams are worthless unless realized.
7. Don't ruminate about the past.
8. Simplify your life (not really sure what he means by this one).
9. Live like today is your last day on earth.
10. Be yourself.
Seems like common sense to me, but that's just me. Suggestions... If you like stories, look for a good novel and not something by Og Mandino. If you want self help or inspirational, I guess the format makes it more enjoyable than something by Stephen Covey but I would still recommend Dale Carnegie's books for usefulness and entertainment value.

Not his best

Even though this book is great by anyone's standards, it is not Og Mandino's best. It is very similar to "The Greatest Salesman in the World" (also by Mandino) but it somehow does not live up to the eternal masterpiece. The story itself is as striking as "Salesman" but the 10 principles are rather lethargically added to the end and do not carry the power of the ones in "Salesman". If you already own "Salesman" this is a worthwhile investment for sure, if not get "The Greatest Salesman in the World" instead. Whichever one you choose it will change your life that I can guarantee.
Ps. Anyone else notice Anthony Robins copies Mandino's principles exactly and makes it more detailed?
