Fun read for tweeners with an interesting concept thrown in.

I bought this book because of my son's school book club had this on their list. It is an easy and fun read for your middle schooler. Plus, I like the whole concept of reading the story line and then it's augmented by video you go online to watch. I won't go into detail about the actual story, but if you like suspense then this is a great book. It's number 1 in a series of 4.

I read the first book, Skeleton Creek, with my fifth grade class and the kids were so engaged! I read Ghost in the Machine in less than two days! It was spookier than the first, which I loved. I was worried that the second book would not live up to the hype, which is usually the case with sequels. Not this time. Ryan and Sarah work to uncover the mystery behind Skeleton Creek, all the while doing so behind their parents' backs. My students were BEGGING me to read this sequel with them when we return to school next week. Thank you, Patrick Carman, for bringing this story to life in such a unique format and presentation. Fantastic!!

I literally have ordered each of these books three or four times over the past five years. I cannot keep them on my library shelves for a day, and I have needed multiple copies for some eager readers. The videos are extremely motivating for my readers and they are the perfect amount of creepy/scary without being gruesome for intermediate grades. We love Skeleton Creek!

I can't believe I got Godin-ed again

You've got to hand it to Seth Godin.

He's a master of self-promotion and marketing and once again I found myself paying for his table scraps. This time it is POKE THE BOX, which essentially tells you that be successful you have to taken your idea and actually...start. This is another in his well-designed, nicely packaged little books. And I do mean little, 84 pages.

The book reads like a random collection of blogs weaved together with the slimmest of threads.

The book is three years old, but the world hasn't changed that much to forgive Godin's supercilious disparagement of factories, and especially factory workers. This is the worst kind of techie snobbery, looking down a Silicon Valley nose at working men and women. Perhaps Godin should spend time in factories and manufacturing facilities. News flash, manufacturing in the United States is making a comeback, primarily due to the complexity of the goods being produced. Modern factories are tributes to the integration of technology and good old-fashioned manpower.

Where I find myself agreeing with Godin is his indictment of the education system. Yes, it is a stifling experience designed to keep everyone coloring inside the lines. Initiative and energy in schools is often medicated out of our young students.

Fortunately this was a $1.99 Kindle purchase. No trees died and I spend more for a cup of coffee. A couple of good quotes, a great story or two--especially about an enterprising Canadian band--and that's about it.

Godin is one of a legion of business writers who offer pronouncements and advice devoid of any rigorous data or case studies. I would never run my company based on anecdotes.

I swear...my last Seth Godin "book."

Look, this is VERY simple.

This book is NOT meant to be a nobel-prize winner.
This book is NOT meant to be a long novel.
This book is NOT about describing everything in detail.
This book is NOT about giving you a step-by-step plan.

This book is an IGNITER.

It's a punch in the face, reminding you that your dreams are NOT going to fall in your lap, that they're NOT going to be fulfilled by reading any more, and that you've been procrastinating for too long.

It's SUPPOSED to be a short book, to make sure that EVERYONE reads it!! And then quickly stops reading, and starts ACTING!!

I'm about to order my second 15-pack, because I carry this book with me at all times, hoping to have an interaction with someone who's at a crossroads, and being able to give them this gift. Because THAT's where this book shines.

It's a permission slip for people to do what they REALLY want to do. And... I don't know what it is about it, but Poke The Box simply GETS THROUGH 100% of the time.

There isn't a single person I've gifted this to who hasn't immediately started working on their dream, FINALLY!

One of my friends finally made the decision to move to France and chase her dream of becomimg a chef (abandoning Medical School) even though it's a much harder path, all because this book IGNITED her in the right way. She took Poke The Box within her limited luggage.

Another friend finally quit the job he hated as an insanely successful TV producer, and decided to start working on his lifelong dream of being a writer and speaker.

Another friend who's a singer decided to start sharing herself fully on social media, instead of censoring every message, worrying about what her audience *might prefer*, and she instantly DOUBLED the reactions (likes+comments) she's getting from fans.

This book teaches you NONE of that. It's not a book about social media, or being a writer, or moving to France. See, that's precisely the magic of Poke The Box:

It's a book that GIVES YOU PERMISSION TO FINALLY GO FOR IT!! IN YOUR OWN WAY!!

How can a message like THAT not deserve 5 stars?!??

Rehash of Older Work

As background, I absolutely love Seth's work. I read his blog daily and within the past year finished The Dip, Tribes, and Linchpin.

Having said that, I'm hard pressed to give this manifesto more than 3 or 3.5 stars. While the content is certainly motivational and inspiring, the overall message and theme felt the same as his other aforementioned books. In other words, the material didn't seem fresh. There were several sections that I felt were extremely similar to his earlier work (sometimes even the examples were the same) but just not in the same depth/detail.

For seasoned Godin readers, I think you can safely skip this one.
For new readers to Seth's work, I'd steer you towards Tribes and Linchpin first instead of this manifesto. You'll get more information, understanding, and background story to many of his key points.

In the end, it's still a nice kick in the pants to get started. Do something. Now.

About the Author

Written by Bryn Thomas, the first edition of this book was shortlisted for the Thomas Cook Travel and Guide Book Awards. In 1991 he set up Trailblazer, to produce the series of route guides for adventurous travellers that has now grown to over 40 titles.

     Fully revised and expanded, this 9th edition is updated by Anna Kaminski, a Russian-UK national and guidebook writer who is a professional guide-book writer also working for Lonely Planet and Rough Guides.

Literally the best travel guide I've ever purchased

This is the BEST Guide you can find for this trip.

I took the Trans Siberian railway last summer and this book had way more information than any other guide we saw people carrying. I can confirm that every single thing that is said on the book is just like it is in reality when you are on the train, visiting cities and organizing the trip. Moreover, the historical information provided by the book helped us understand the political past of every country we went through (we took the trans-mongolian so we went through Russia, Mongolia and China) and the stories on how the railway was built and its initial purpose really helped us understand its historical context.
Literally the best travel guide I've ever purchased. You won't regret buying it when you spend so many hours on the train!

Good book---I'm going. Getting Russia/China Visas is a pain in the Ars. These countries should be encouraging one to visit and spend money-----not throw up stumbling blocks.

Rich and famous

What a discovery. A. A. Gill is a remarkably stylish humorist. If you know him only through his sharp profiles and essays, this novel is an enjoyable introduction to a sharp, insightful writer. His observatoins on what it means to be rich and famous -- and how the rich and famous are most certianly NOT like the rest of us -- are witty, also right on the money.

Stick with the Articles

First of all, let me say I admire AA Gill. His writing skills are incomparable- when he does nonfiction. His vocabulary is breathtaking, fierce intelligence bites out through the words, and he is just the master of the cutting, sarcastic, insulting bon mot, or an equally beautiful and uplifting observation.

But for some reason, when he does fiction, it's like some other persona picks up the pen. Some of his other books have come across as being bad enough to have been done for a dare over drinks (or not, since he's sober now), with every kind of idiotic situation and sexual fantasy minced up and churned out as rapidly as possible. The book with the big dog was particularly inane.

This one is mildly readable, no great shakes, but no Great Danes (or whatever the hell that dog was) either- thank heavens. Not particularly worth seeking out, but nor is it one you have to grit your teeth til it's over with either.

Wonderfully acid, then sweet book from UK writer with scandalous reputation

Gill is the master of outrage, and this combination of romantic comedy and farce utterly delivers. It is acidic most of the way through, but Gill-the-Meanie turns out to be a softy as things wind on and what looks otherwise doomed has a happy ending.

The condensed protocols version of Molecular Cloning is well written, concise and adequately referenced. Protocols are easy to follow and provide options depending upon individual experimental needs and preference.

The protocols provide information from home made recipes to prepared reagents available commercially.

The protocols work in my hands.

The book is large and not easily used on bench top. Otherwise it is a good resource for the laboratory.

Ridiculous pricing!

I have used this book and it is great! But is it worth 900$! No! It is not funny to have such ridiculous prices for OLD books, no matter how valuable they are and especially when you can buy them elsewhere for 100$. Amazon needs to do something about this.

nice bench top protocols

It is a nice written and ease read manual. It is still too heavy to carry around, I wonder whether this can be a half-sized book that is printed in smaller fonts. I guess molecular biologists wouldn't care about small size fonts, they deal with small stuff all the time.

I don't recommend it. Also

This is an ok guide but is incomplete for the locations of audio diaries. For some reason it has them all on the map but when it does the walkthrough, it mentions some but not others. I bought this guide for the diary locations and I still had to use a youtube guide. If you want it for this, I don't recommend it. Also, I l already had a guide for Bioshock Infinite and it is the same exactly as the one in this collection with no improvement but it has slightly different artwork.

A perfect companion to have by your side!

I was so excited when I heard that they were re-releasing the Bioshock series in a remastered version for the newest consoles. The games themselves were beautiful in the first place, and the remasters don't disappoint.

I pre-ordered both the book and the game, and my book came in just in time. It's been very well written, and the pictures are great! It has proven to be a useful companion during my journey. I like to squeeze every last bit of game play and achievement that I can from a game, and this guide will absolutely help anyone that plays in this manner. It does a great job of giving you all of the info that you need at the time without spoiling things as long as you don't read the book cover-to-cover before you begin the game.

I'm also a collector, and like to have the guide to go with the game in my collection. It has collector's value, and I don't regret my purchase in the least.

Nice guide.

I love Bioshock. This is a nice guide to help get through the game. It was even better that it came with a code to access the maps and everything right on my tablet. The only drawback is not all audio diaries are listed in walkthrough.
