An outstanding linguistic tool.

This is an outstanding tool for those engaged in linguistic studies.
I am presently chasing the history of the modern Spanish varieties from Roman Latin, so an understanding of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) is a key to my study materials. These materials are in English and in Spanish extensively use IPA to show changes in words with time.
The interface of this software is easy to use and allows one to see and hear the variations between the sounds in the IPA chart. It runs works on both Mac and Windows computers. No iOS or Android versions, yet.

Great For Learning Foreign Languages

My Portuguese teacher in Portugal told me "Those in the know, know that the Pope doesn't speak 30 or more languages. How he manages to speak to millions in their native language is that his sermons are written out in the International Phoentic Alphabet (IPA). Once you learn a little about the pronounciation of the IPA, you can learn a foreign language much easier."

I bought Paul Meier's CD, began using it, and have had a quantum leap improvement in my pronounciation of Portuguese. I wish I had discovered this 40 years ago when I was learning French, German, and Spanish!

Convenient offline tool with broad coverage of IPA symbols & associated sounds

This is a Flash-based tool that provides clear audio for the various sounds of IPA, including the vowels, stops and clicks not typically present in English or other Indo-European languages. It works well on my Mac (haven't tried it on the PC). It also works equally well without the CD, so you can load the contents onto a local directory and run it from there.

It's very easy to use and quite comprehensive. From the main screen, you'll be presented with a longish page of seven sections--consonants (pulmonics), consonants (non-pulmonics), vowels, diacritics, suprasegmentals, diphthongs & triphthongs--both American and British flavors--and other symbols (e.g. labial-velar fricatives, epiglottal sounds and a few others that don't fit neatly into the other charts). There are a few sounds in the vowel section I had problems distinguishing, but that's more likely a problem with my own ears.

Clicking on a symbol plays the associated sound while mousing over the symbol pops up a description. In the case of the vowel chart, mousing over the row/column labels also provides information on articulation--e.g. tongue forward or back, jaws open or closed--which I found helpful on some of the less common vowels (less common for a native speaker of American English, that is). Depending on the symbol, you'll hear up to three different pronunciations based on where the sound appears in a word--as an initial, intra-word or final.

Two small criticisms:
(1) the voice is male; it would have been good to include both male and female speakers for reference, and
(2) a warning in terms of usage: don't click on a new symbol until the audio is finished from your previous selection, or the new audio will play over the current selection. Typically, I'd expect a new selection to cancel the play of the previous before starting, but it's a minor quibble and may simply be an artifact of the Flash environment as opposed to a design flaw. In any case, you will only have to wait a few seconds until it finishes.

Summary: There are online sources for much of this information, but given the breadth of coverage, relatively low cost and clarity of the audio, not to mention the convenience of having a comprehensive source for IPA sounds & symbols when you're offline, this product is a good value.

In the world of Training and Development, this book is well organized and insightful. This book is somewhat technical, and should be read by those who already have some familiarity with the subject. Ford supplies a thorough and insightful overview of measurement techniques and settles on the ADDIE model (from Instructional Systems Design) as a best practice to organize efforts to measure the effectiveness of training. In addition to providing a literature review of most of the popular design and analysis tools in use in the world of corporate training today, the book also has a valuable 30 page appendix including 16 instructional design tools (deliverables)- templates for designing budgets, sample participant reaction surveys, sample test specifications, etc.

Frank Schmalleger, Ph.D., is Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. He chaired the university’s department of sociology, social work, and criminal justice for almost 20 years – while specializing in research in crime and delinquency. He has taught dozens of courses at both the graduate and undergraduate level in both on-ground and on-line environments.� Schmalleger is the author of many books and journal articles, including the standard-setting Criminal Justice Today, 14/e (Pearson); Criminal Justice: A Brief Introduction, 12/e (Pearson); Criminology Today, 8/e (Pearson); Criminology, 3/e (Pearson); Criminal Law Today, 6/e (Pearson); Corrections in the Twenty-First Century, 6/e (McGraw-Hill; with John Smykla); Courts and Criminal Justice in America (Pearson; with Larry Siegel and John Worrall); Juvenile Delinquency, 10/e (Pearson; with Clem Bartollas); and Policing, 2/e (Pearson; with John Worrall). Good advanced calc book at a good price.

Good starter book for advanced calculus with a good selection of topics and workable (read -> concept enforcing) problems. Nothing too tough or tricky. If you want an "advanced calculus" book, this is a bargain. The other choice would be Apostol's advanced calculus book, which is a classic, but does cost more. Of the advanced calculus books available from Dover, this is probably the one you want to buy.

Very nice book

This is a very good book -- very clear, rigorous and with good exercises.
There are answers to some of the more "mechanical" kind of exercises at the end of the book.

Chapter 10 covers (not extensively, of course) Euler's summation formula, asymptotic series, Fourier series, Lagrange multipliers, the divergence theorem in R^n, harmonic functions, ODE and the Riemman-Steiltjes integral.

Probably the best book on real analysis

Many books cover real analysis only through a single variable. This book takes it a step further by dedicating several chapters to covering the n dimensional calculus Very clear writing with detailed proofs.
