Thank God for Amazon Rentals

This book was so expensive at my campus book store. It was about $30 cheaper on amazon. But the rental was the best deal; it really saved me money (university students...the struggle is real!)

It's a pretty good book, all black and white, no color pictures, but the diagrams are well illustrated and easy to follow. (see: aquifers) The material was an easy reading level, like 8th or 9th grade level (at least, to me). Chock full of great information about water quality, waste disposal, and radiation that has come up in other subjects and classes.

All I had to do is print the label and send it back. I got an A- (92%) in my class. Thanks Amazon!

You get what you pay for

I purchased this book USED for my Environmental Health course at American Public University (APU). The book is very easy to read for a graduate level book. However, the content is very detailed and you will gain much knowledge from reading this text. I am very pleased with this purchase and I will not hesitate to purchase another USED text.

Slanted history presented

I found the book to be very good. The introduction to each excerpted work was helpful in understanding the goal of the original writer. The only downfall I have is this particular author seems to be a bit of a revisionist. He very specifically leaves out important pieces that I assume he finds objectionable, such as the basis for the caste system.

A really good book

Before reading this book I thought I knew a lot about Indian religions. I always loved to go to temples and to listen to stories about the gods and read the Gita. I knew many of the saints and had even read some of their writings in my mother tongue and in English. But I was surprised how many saints there were in other parts of the country I had never heard about. Or if I knew their names, I didn't know very much about them. Who would have thought that the Sikh gurus could write such beautiful bhakti songs? And the writings of the Sufi saints are so beautiful - like the Hindu mystics in many ways. As for Buddhism and Jainism, I must admit I hardly knew anything and it was very interesting to read their scriptures. I of course knew that Buddha was from India but somehow I never thought of him as an Indian! Like everybody else I had a sort of bad idea about Tantra Yoga and was glad to learn that there is a lot more to it than people think. But my favourite part was reading the modern mystics like Sri Ramakrishna and Sri Aurobindo and also others like Swami Ramdas. I think everyone could learn a lot by reading this book even if they think they already know a lot about Indian religion. And if you don't know anything about it, this is the best introduction I have ever seen.

The best English-language account of the GDR

Mary Fulbrook has done an excellent job in writing a concise analysis of the GDR in plain English. The book is very well researched and Professor Fulbrook has a clear and compassionate understanding of her subject. Her thesis that the GDR can be best classified as a dictatorship is convincing and well argued.
I am myself researching the role of the Protestant Church in the GDR, and was pleased to find a chapter in Fulbrook's book devoted to this subject. Western scholars have a record of embarassing themselves (out of ignorance) on topics such as this, but Fulbrook does an outstanding job.

The best recent English-language account of the GDR

Mary Fulbrook has done an excellent job in succinctly analysing the political system of the GDR, arguing that the former East Germany state is best classified as a "dictatorship". Her writing is easily understood by non-specialists and her compassion and attention to detail heightens the reader's interest in this fascinating subject. The book is excellently researched, with Professor Fulbrook combing the now open East German State and Party archives to present new material alongside her central thesis. Her insightful chapter on the role of the Church is especially welcome, since this subject has long been recognised by German scholars as of central importance, but is too often neglected or misunderstood by non-Germans academics. "Anatomy" is clearly the best book to recently appear on the "first socialist state on German soil".

Very detailed history of the GDR, but the writing style is a minus.

As other reviews point out, this is a very detailed history of the GDR that shows a
great deal of research. The author's writing style needed a good editor, I think, to
eliminate some of the long, non-essential "sleep inducing" sentences, such as:
"Bearing this wider context in mind, let us proceed to examine in more detail the role
of different domestic political currents in the unfolding story of the demise of the GDR."
There are too many sentences of that kind for me - introductory sentences such as "Let
us now examine the..." etc. I'm glad that I read the book, though. I borrowed it from the
library.

Very condensed, concise book

Book is very thin, totaling just 255 pages. A required book for my immunology class for pharmacy school, written by my professor. This is a book you'd be willing to bring to class, not a heavy thick textbook at all.

Prescribed Text book for Hogeschool van Amsterdam MBA module Operations Management

I am the lecturer of the module Operations Management for the Masters of Business Administration(MBA) study at the Hogeschool van Amsterdam(University). I find this an excellent book,describing all the various aspects of Operations, varying from Production oriented to Service oriented companies, covering the whole spectrum of Operations in Business. The visual aids by way of diagrams and photo's makes it easier for students to identify with the key challenges that Operations managers face. I would recommend this book to any Operational manager who wants to top up their theoretical skills, and for academics who wants to get a view of the world of operations.

Three simple approaches to meditate

I like the three simple approaches to meditate that are outlined in the book.
1. Day dream, (now I have an excuse to day dream)
2. 1000 mile stare
3. Muscle relaxation

I didn't like all the fluff around the approaches and the feeling that I was being sold something.

The day dreaming approach to meditation was new to me. The muscle relaxation in the book more of relaxe your muscles. In other books I've read the approach is to tense up one group of muscles and then move to the next. when you focus on the next group of muscles the body automatically relaxes the last group.

Over all it was worth the read. Who knows if you try the approaches you might like it.

The style is direct and unpretentious. The message is simple but extraordinarily powerful: life is short, the past and the future are inaccessible, pain and pleasure have no meaning, but inside each one of us there is a ruling faculty that is touched only by itself. Only that which makes us better capable of confronting our condition with resolution and courage can be said to be good, and only that which makes us worse and more unsatisfied can be said to be bad. The only thing that is of any importance is our own private quest for perfection, which no external power can ever destroy. This book delivers many insightful and inspirational observations about human nature and the human condition, and he makes an excellent rational argument for seeking the good and for acting modestly and continently. I cannot think or a more satifying and moving work, and it is all the more poignant because it was written by a man who wielded almost absolute power and lived surrounded by the luxury, yet managed to keep things in perspective and to occupy himself only with what truly matters. One sentence captures perfectly the spirit of his writings: "Where a man can live, there he can also live well." An extraordinary testimony of wisdom and fortitude.

Of course, this book can learn you how to meditatie but if you want to find out what meditation to meditate deeper and properly I would recommend to try read "a crossing or the drop's history" by Anatoliy Obraztsov before.

Worth reading a few times

I really enjoyed this book and I'll read it again a few more times. I like James' writing style, he tells interesting stories. In this book he mentions another book of his called "Beyond Belief" so I bought it and that turned out to be a good decision - I like it very much (haven't finished it yet). Thank you so much James Coyle for sharing your knowledge with us, much appreciated!

This should be required reading for everyone as a practical roadmap to a deeper understanding of your practice, your life, and how changes in one lead to changes in the other. The book contains twenty-two units of study. As students work through these, cross-references take them to relevant sections of the DVD. The Bolivian and Peruvian Quechua sections of the multimedia program are divided into thematically and grammatically ordered modules, which introduce users to different aspects of Andean life, while progressing language learning in a structured way. Users engage with the audio, video, and visual material contained in the DVD through a range of interactive exercises, which reinforce listening and comprehension skills. Once familiarity with the language is acquired, the multimedia program may be used independently from the book.

About the Author
Rosaleen Howard is Chair of Hispanic Studies at Newcastle University and former Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Latin American Studies of the University of Liverpool. She specializes in the indigenous languages and cultures of the Andean region, with a particular interest in the interface between Quechua- and Spanish-speaking populations, and has published on topics ranging from Quechua oral narrative performance to language and education policy for speakers of indigenous languages and its relationship with indigenous politics.

Fills a gap

It is the first item I've found that enables hearing of spoken Quechua, the rhythm and the sounds. The two types of Quechua (Bolivian and Peruvian) are surprisingly different. (I'm hearing more of the lyrics in my music CDs now, altho there remains the problem of small vocabulary.)

There are weaknesses - the sound level is erratic, some of the speakers don't enunciate well, the topics are a bit random.

However, there is nothing else I've found that comes remotely close. If you want to HEAR it as well as read it, this is the place.

Mostly acceptable and functional multimedia, but certainly not the greatest

I'm a beginning Quechua student with no teacher, so I was thrilled to find this. It arrived today, and I've been perusing the app since I want to become conversant in the Cuzco dialect.

This review is for the MultiMedia disc, since I'm most interested in the Cuzco dialect which is ONLY on the multimedia disc and not covered in the book, which mainly covers Bolivian Quechua.

It's is indeed great to be able to see and hear Cuzco Quechua spoken, and to see a transcript with the language broken down plus an English translation! Yay for that.

When playing videos you can see the Quechua and English or the Quechua 'analysis' and English - the words broken down into their roots and suffixes (which is enormously helpful), but not both the Quechua and the analysis at the same time.

You can not re-size or move the application or any window in it, which is baffling in this day and age, especially on a MAC.
You can not highlight any text to copy to another browser window so that you can search on it there - you have to retype text by hand if I want to make study guides or sample dialogs for myself.
Videos are tiny, and sound quality varies incredibly - on some you have to turn the volume all the way up and only barely be able to hear, and on the next one it might blow you right out of your chair.
You can't quit the application easily - you can use the 'exit' button, but that only puts you back at the main menu. To stop the app altogether, I have to use the key commands to quit a running program, or use Force Quit from the Finder.

There is a ? feature that has ways of finding and explaining content. However, it has inconsistencies. When I type in "maymantataq" from the phrase "maymantataq kankiri" (where are you from?), I get the translation and also the example, "maymantataq hamunki". Having never seen 'hamunki' before, I type that in, but that word is not found in the dictionary. Discouraging! What does it mean? How is it broken down?

So, there is some good, some bad.

An excellent introduction to southern Quechua

This is an excellent introduction to southern (Bolivian/Southern Peruvian) Quechua, the product of sustained collaboration between Rosaleen Howard and speaker-linguists from several different local varieties. I recommend it highly.

Good supplement to a text book

I bought this book to help me study for a Governmental Accounting class final. I wish I had the book the entire semester. It's a well written, concise book that boils down the intricate details of governmental accounting that is presented in text books into the more manageable and understandable essentials. It must have helped, because I ended up receiving an "A" in the course.

Excellent Supplement to Academic Text

I purchased this book because I was taking a Governmental Accounting class online & the required text was awful! I needed some immediate help, and my instructor was no help so (as usual!), I turned to Amazon.

The title of this book says it all. The author explains the very difficult concepts of governmental accounting very clearly. It is easy to decipher what the funds are and how they inter-relate. This book is very well written and follows a logical, sequencial path. I never would have passed my class without this book!

good book

Not a bad book for a beginning Governmental accounting book. I had no true "accounting" background when I started my job with a government agency, but had done bookkeeping for other businesses using just basics and common sense. It was definately different. This book helps guide you through all the different aspects of governmental accounting. It's very dry reading, but very imformative. You can actually find what you are looking for in the index and go right there and get the info you need quickly. I do recommend it to anyone getting in that type of accounting
