The Philosophy of Tai Chi Chuan: Wisdom from Confucius, Lao Tzu, and Other Great Thinkers, by Freya Boedicker, Martin Boedicker

The essence of Tai Chi Chuan lies in the rich philosophy of ancient China. While most Tai Chi practitioners are aware of the value that studying Chinese philosophy can bring to their practice, it is often difficult to pick out those texts that are most relevant to Tai Chi and connected to its development. The Philosophy of Tai Chi Chuan presents, for the first time, a concise overview of the Chinese martial and spiritual philosophies that drive this ancient tradition.Authors Freya and Martin Boedicker, who teach Tai Chi throughout Europe and South Africa, present freshly translated excerpts from such popular and widely studied works as the Tao Te Ching, the I Ching, and The Art of War, as well as writings by philosophers and strategists such as Zhuangzi and Wuzi. Each chapter of this concise volume focuses on a single work or philosopher, and includes a short history of each one as well as a description of their relevance to Tai Chi. An extensive glossary of important Chinese terms rounds out the book. The Philosophy of Tai Chi Chuan offers readers a direct connection with the concepts that form the foundation of Tai Chi, inspiring a deeper understanding of the art and its applications.

“An important work for the practitioner that wants to understand the inner works of Tai Chi, to ‘raise the essence and attune the spirit.’ The Philosophy of Tai Chi Chuan is also a good quality rendition by Blue Snake Books and should find a welcome spot in the Philosophy section of your library.”

Nice Idea - Needs Fleshing Out
By Stewart Hay
Registered Instructor - Tai Chi Union of Great Britain (TCUGB)
Instructor - Northern Wu Taiji Quan Global Alliance

I really liked the authors' idea of offering "a direct connection with the concepts that form the foundation of Tai Chi, inspiring a deeper understanding of the art and its applications".

The "Philosophy of Tai Chi Chuan" (PTCC) covers twelve texts beginning with the I Ching. Also featured are Taoist (Lao Zi, Zhuang Zi, Lie Zi, Nei Ye & Huainanzi), Confucian (Analects, Da Xue & Zhong Yong) and Military works (Sun Zi, Wu Zi & Sun Bin).

A notable omission, given its influence on Tai Chi Chuan (TCC) and the art's own Classics, is the Tai Chi Diagram Explanation of Zhou Dun Yi.

The authors give their view about the influence of each text on the practice of TCC. The influences cited are typically general in nature, explanations are brief, and there is little specific application.

Classical Chinese philosophical works are not easy to understand. Commentaries are often provided to minimise misunderstandings as, per the TCC classics, "being off by a hair's breadth is to miss by a thousand miles". PTCC has no commentaries. Readers must make their own connections, as best they can, between TCC and the excerpts.

I admire the German authors for translating from Chinese into English. I hope that their book stimulates some positive discussions. Some chapters/things that caught my eye:

Zhuang Zi. The authors describe "non-acting (wuwei)" as an important concept that means "neither too much nor too little action". This changes to "not to interfere with or act against naturalness" in the glossary.

Other commentators place most emphasis on the nature, rather than the amount, of action e.g. "going with the flow". In martial terms others have expressed wuwei as "rolling with the punches". Blending with, rather than resisting, an opponent's action is wuwei.

Wu Zi. The authors say that "those who learn TCC practice an old Chinese martial art. Nevertheless, most students of TCC view the use of violence skeptically. This skepticism can also be found in the texts of the strategists of old China".

My dictionary defines scepticism as "an attitude of doubt especially associated with implied criticism." I do wonder if "pragmatic" is perhaps a more appropriate description for the attitude of the strategists towards violence.

Given that TCC is a martial art it's no surprise that there are many accounts of famous TCC masters visiting varying degrees of violence upon challengers, assailants, would be assassins, assorted lowlifes & even their own students. Some even seemed to enjoy it and didn't need too much prompting either.

We (civilian, emotionally mature) TCC students understand the limitations of violence in conflict resolution. We aim to avoid using it. But we recognise when violence is necessary. At which point our training allows us (hopefully!) to apply a proportionate and lawful level of violence effectively. This is nothing to be doubtful or critical about.

Da Xue. The authors write that "one can imagine that many masters of TCC saw their art not only as a collection of self-defence techniques or health exercises but also as a form of self-cultivation. This also explains the great importance of the solo forms, which many students of TCC consider to be the substance of their art".
It's probably a lost-in-translation moment, but given the sophisticated, coherent, strategies and tactics described in TCC literature I doubt that any TCC Masters viewed their martial art as a "collection of self-defence techniques".

That many people who practice solo forms consider them to be "the substance of their art" is, however, well known. There are many forms: some fast; some slow; some overtly martial; some less so. We can practice the same form in many different ways too. Many people have fun and get many benefits from practicing form and only form. But can we really say that we're practicing the martial art of TCC if the solo form is "the" substance of our art?

The authors noted that the I Ching structured the world in pairs of opposites and that this has a fundamental influence on TCC. Civilian and Military are such a pair. TCC Master Tung Ying Chieh used these terms to describe the practice of TCC as follows:

"The civil aspect of Taijiquan is the Body (the Form). The military aspect is the Application. Training in the civil aspect is learning about yourself. The military aspect is needed for confrontation. If one learns the civil aspect and ignores the military aspect, it is the body with no function. If the military aspect is not based on the civil aspect, it is a tree with no root."

The authors stated that the Da Xue addresses "peaceful and respectful dealings with each other". The partner work (military) aspect of TCC allow us to develop such dealings very directly. And it complements the hand form/solo exercises to give a more complete art.

In conclusion I found this book to be an interesting read and a recommended buy. The basic premise was a nice idea but it needs to be explored in more detail to make this a great book. I would welcome the authors revisiting this subject in the future and fleshing out the relationships between the classic texts and TCC.

Aj tai chi journey waiting for all of us
By Gerardo Lopez Sastre
It has been a real pleasure to read this book. If one wants to do more than copy a lot of movements without any meaning one needs to know "the reason behind". This means not only the more or less hidden applications, but the philosophy that supports them, the core ideas that provide the strategy of Tai Chi and allow the practitioner to know what is right and what is wrong. In this field it is very easy to get lost. A lot of big words and flurry concepts: dao, de, full and empty .... Why not skip all this and concentrate in the practice? A big mistake! Theory without practice is not going to improve our health or our martial ability. But practice without theory is blind. We need to know that some Chinese philosophers believed that the weak overcomes the strong, and that this principle is embodied in Tai Chi. Chinese strategists thought about the art of deception. So if the enemy is strong we must evade him, but if he is holding back, we must look arrogant. And we could continue ... I had a Tai Chi Master who used to say that Tai Chi was created by intelligent people who were getting older and could not trust any longer in brute force. So, from the beginning the tai chi practitioner (and especially complete beginners) must know what they are doing, the specific quality of what they are doing. This is what they can learn in this book, some quite easy to understand Chinese texts that present "abstract concepts"; but (and this is the magic of Tai Chi) concepts that can be felt, can be embodied in movements of the solo form or in the interaction with a partner. In this sense I would recommend strongly the reading of this book, and then ...to put it into practice. A wonderful Tai chi journey is waiting for all of us.

Great addition to Taijiquan theory studies
By Terence King
For all taijiquan enthusiasts who have read the taiji classics and wished to know more about the vast background of Chinese philosophy which lies behind them, this book is for you! It consists of carefully-chosen excerpts from those works of Chinese philosophy which have the most direct bearing on the development of taijiquan. The authors have done a great job of selecting, translating, and commenting on these passages, giving in effect a brief history of Chinese philosophy in less than 100 pages. Those of us without the background or time to investigate the immense body of material represented here can be thankful that the authors have done the work for us. Highly recommended for any taijiquan student who is interested in the ways of thinking that led to this great art.

Koreans in the Persian Gulf: Policies and International Relations (Routledge Studies in Middle Eastern Politics), by Shirzad Azad

Analyzing the Korean Peninsula’s contemporary engagement with the Persian Gulf region from the 1950s to the present day, the book begins by asking the following question: What drew Koreans to the region in the first place and under what circumstances were they drawn there?

While taking into account a combination of both external and internal factors shaping the dynamics of the Korean Peninsula’s interactions with the Persian Gulf region, this book largely concentrates on the agency factor to analyze the nature and scope of a rather multifaceted relationship between the two areas. The Republic of Korea has, in fact, maintained diverse connections to every single country in the Persian Gulf over the past several decades, and its rather considerable activities and accomplishments in the region all justify such an overwhelming focus. The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea’s record in the Persian Gulf, however, is mostly limited to its relationship with Iran, though Pyongyang has pursued relationships with some other states in the region. This book studies the elements of Pyongyang’s actions in the region as an appendage to South Korea’s various political and economic achievements.

Employing a process-tracing approach, this book will be of interest to policymakers, as well as to students and scholars of International Relations, Middle East Studies and Asian Studies.

"Just as rigor does not reside in the barbell but in the act of lifting it, rigor in reading is not an attribute of a text but rather of a reader's behavior-engaged, observant, responsive, questioning, analytical. The close reading strategies in Notice and Note will help you cultivate those critical reading habits that will make your students more attentive, thoughtful, independent readers."
-Kylene Beers and Robert E. Probst

In Notice and Note Kylene Beers and Bob Probst introduce 6 "signposts" that alert readers to significant moments in a work of literature and encourage students to read closely. Learning first to spot these signposts and then to question them, enables readers to explore the text, any text, finding evidence to support their interpretations. In short, these close reading strategies will help your students to notice and note.

In this timely and practical guide Kylene and Bob:

  • examine the new emphasis on text-dependent questions, rigor, text complexity, and what it means to be literate in the 21st century
  • identify 6 signposts that help readers understand and respond to character development, conflict, point of view, and theme
  • provide 6 text-dependent anchor questions that help readers take note and read more closely
  • offer 6 Notice and Note model lessons, including text selections and teaching tools, that help you introduce each signpost to your students.

Notice and Note will help create attentive readers who look closely at a text, interpret it responsibly, and reflect on what it means in their lives. It should help them become the responsive, rigorous, independent readers we not only want students to be but know our democracy demands.

A new Notice and Note Literature Log offers students practice finding the signposts-with over-the-shoulder coaching from Kylene and Bob. Save with 5-packs.

Review
This is the missing link. While the Common Core State Standards require students to read complex texts, read closely, and answer text-dependent questions, nothing shows us how to help students do all that during independent reading nothing until Notice and Note came along. Kylene and Bob show us how we can attend to the demands of the CCSS and support engaged, attentive, independent readers.
---Darl Kiernan, PhD., literacy trainer, Northwest Regional Professional Development, NV

Notice and Note will help you foster rigorous reading and high-level thinking while honoring your students need to interact with what they read. Kylene and Bob forge connections between new academic standards and decades of reading research through commonsense strategies that encourage collaboration and engaged reading. This book is well worth noticing and noting.
---Donalyn Miller, author of The Book Whisperer and a grade 4 teacher, Ft. Worth, TX

Bob and Kylene shared these lessons in my class of eighth graders. When my students began to notice the signposts and ask the accompanying anchor questions, navigating a text became possible even for my struggling readers, and the text became something they not only deeply understood but also enjoyed.
---Jennifer Ochoa, middle school teacher, MS 324, New York City, NY

As Kylene and Bob taught their Notice and Note lessons at Chicago Shakespeare, I watched a room of teachers get curious, slightly anxious, and then completely enthusiastic about these new avenues for approaching literacy in their urban classrooms. Kylene and Bob understand research and real classrooms, which is why their work continues to be essential.
---Marilyn Halperin, Director of Education, Chicago Shakespeare Theater, IL

As Bob and Kylene taught their Notice and Note lessons I watched our students become engaged and excited about reading. Students scoured the text to find support for their thinking, and struggling readers succeeded with texts that would have otherwise been discarded as too hard. Don t buy just one of these books buy one for every teacher in your building!

Teaching students to respond to complex texts is a critical aspect of implementing the Common Core State Standards. When I use Notice and Note lessons in my professional development sessions, teachers invariably go deeper into long familiar texts. These strategies awaken our critical eye and direct us to explore text elements that we might otherwise ignore. Notice and Note strategies will improve how your students analyze and respond to any text.

should be required reading-- you won't regret it!
By A. Jorgensen
This is the BEST book I've EVER read on teaching reading. I've taught reading for 8 years and as a voracious reader myself, I know it can be hard to teach students specific skills that are so automatic for myself. This book has been perfectly written and organized that you and your students could start learning TODAY about how to "notice and note" the signposts that authors use to alert you to important information.
The beginning of the book includes information about the state of reading, teaching and learning today. The middle goes over the various signposts, and the third section includes complete lessons WITH sample texts that you can teach to your students.
These skills are vital for ALL readers--from strugglers to gifted students. It is the first step in teaching them how to think about literature and in preparing them for college level reading.
BUY THIS BOOK! I wish every teacher in my district had this book!

7th Grade Reading Teacher
By Carolyn P. Miller
WITHOUT HESITATION: Buy This Book! If you teach middle-level reading (I teach 7th grade "regular" reading classes) and are struggling with how to teach CLOSE/DEEP reading, this is your new best resource. I have absolutely no connection with the authors--I am simply speaking from a classroom teacher's point of view--and omigosh, this has been my saving grace with CCSS and close reading. I have truly seen the light with the Notice and Note signposts (they are kind of like strategies--not to be confused with Strategies That Work), and more importantly, so have my students.

I received the book on a Thursday, started reading it that weekend--with many "AHA!" moments--and on Monday morning I started in with my first signpost lesson. I knew INSTANTLY that my students were "getting it!" Seriously, I have had moments of giddiness and chills while working with the kids on the different signposts. I have never been this excited about a book.

It is incredibly easy to read. The six introductory lessons are there for you, scripted even, so you easily get the idea of how to teach the signposts, and the text selections are in the back of the book for copying. The authors are very "real" with their comments and how their signpost implementation in the classroom panned out. Lots of "Bwahaha!" moments where I laughed that they were keeping it real with me!

Notice and Note is a perfect fit with the CCSS. My students are easily citing text evidence with the signposts and focusing on the accompanying questions. The questions really bring home the deep thinking that I've struggled with (how to teach) since the advent of the term "close reading." We have been studying The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, and without a doubt, these signposts have deepened my students' understanding and questioning of the novel. We are using our iNotebooks along with the signpost implementation. The kids have easily begun to internalize the signposts, cite evidence (from the signposts), and deepen their thinking with the questions--keeping up with it all in their notebooks.

The six strategies have made me a better reader, as well. I told my students the other day that I would no longer be afraid to join my neighborhood book study (my fear has always been that profound thoughts and ideas would be expected of me because I teach reading!).

I could say soooo much more about how in our discussions we have even gone back to other novels we have studied or that students have read independently and talked about the signposts we realize were in them...PLUS... although I am not an English teacher, I can say that these signposts would fit perfectly in a writing program to help add voice and style to narrative pieces. Have I sold you on this yet?

I just can't say enough about this book. #lifechanger

Refreshing and Practical
By Jeff Williams
Kylen Beers and Bob Probst have given teachers (and the children they teach) a wonderful gift in the form of their new book, Notice and Note. I read this book quickly and felt as if I'd struck gold and am now rereading it to mine all the little pieces I missed the first time through. Practical and smart writing, careful and deliberate research and an easy to read format, make this text a must for literacy teachers, literacy coaches, reading interventionists and curriculum directors. My favorite gems include the streamlined language about big concepts that teach children how to notice and take note of six particular sign-posts found in most literature. Short, applicable and adaptable lessons about these six signposts are truly what teachers need access to and after my first round of using one lesson in a 5th grade classroom this morning, I had four students approach me to tell me how they were already noticing the concept in their lives or books! As a district literacy coach in a high-performing district, I will be doing a book study with my entire staff using this refreshing and practical text that houses many gems and will certainly change how you look at and teach children how to "read closely". Highly applicable to grades 3-12!
