Outstanding Resource for Schools, Teachers, and Parents

This book clearly spells out and categorizes ways for schools, teachers, and parents to meet the needs of gifted children, including which students will benefit from particular instructional delivery methods and how each student need can best be addressed. Dr. Rogers uses examples of real-life individual students as she outlines the recommended steps for writing individual education plans (IEPs) for gifted students. The key question this book asks is "What Kind of Education Do You Want for Your Gifted Child?" This research-based book discusses acceleration of students, grouping within the school setting, and program provisions both in and outside of school. The supplementary materials appendix contains a wealth of information with interest and attitude inventories in the four core academic areas. You won't want to miss the section on Bibliotherapy which offers a excellent list of books to help students overcome personal issues and fears. My favorite section addresses "When They Say..., What Will You Say?" The recommended responses when confronted with "elitist" and "ability grouping" claims made by anti-grouping advocates and educators are thoroughly outlined, including the research studies which support these answers. This outstanding book includes recommended efforts that should be placed on academic progress, academic remediation, psychological adjustment, and socialization for gifted students. This book is a "must have" for all parents and educators of the gifted!

Step-by-step guide to needs of gifted children

This book is a step-by-step guide to evaluating the needs and characteristics of a gifted child and understanding the educational options that might be appropriate for him or her based on an individual profile. The book has surveys and instruments that parents (or educators) can use to determine children's talent potential, learning style preferences, and interests and attitudes. The book contains lists of educational options including those implemented in school (e.g. cluster grouping, whole grade skipping, subject acceleration, etc.) and outside-of-school options such as talent search summer programs. There are compendiums of contests and competitions and summer programs, although these are spotty and not comprehensive. Rogers includes the research findings, much of which comes from her own work, regarding the cognitive and social effects of each type of educational option. The book contains many anecdotal examples of different "types" of gifted children to illustrate both the use of the profiling system and the matching to educational options and programs. While this book is meant for parents, the level of detail and analysis provided within the chapters indicates that parents and educators with some knowledge about gifted education and/or experience with gifted children would benefit most from this book.

User-friendly for teachers and parents

Finally, a book that is user-friendly for teachers and parents is now available. Dr. Rogers has approached the subject of gifted education from the perspective of what the parent and teacher need to know about services for gifted students, what the students are like and distinguishes giftedness from talent in a clear, well-organized manner.
I found the Supplementary Materials particularly helpful in providing understandable, readily available inventories for all interested parties. I have recently used the "Interest and Attitudes about Arts Learning" in a session designed to integrate the arts into interdisciplinary, thematic planning and teaching. The teacher audience took copies of the survey with them and were anxious to secure their own copy of Dr. Rogers' book.
As a university instructor, I find the book one that I plan to use as a graduate text for both "Characteristics of Gifted" and "Methods and Materials for Teaching Gifted." Portions are applicable for both courses, when combined with additional supplemental books to provide a really sound knowledge base for
combining pedagogy and practice.
I applaud Dr. Rogers for her creativity and grounded logic in providing a much needed approach to the world of practice for the gifted and talented. What an asset to the current body of knowledge relative to gifted education. We have needed another practical, well-organized refreshing approach for a long time. Thank you, Karen.

The best 10 minute home exercise plan for women of all ages

I first came across this book when I was in the American Air Force in 1974, it was used in Basic Training for the girls in the service. I loved the ease with which it could be followed, and the great results it achieved in toning and strengthening my body. It is applicable to women of all ages, and of all athletic capabilities, giving you an exercise plan from easy to hard at your own pace. It is too bad that it is out of print. It is more effective than most other exercise plans and requires no equipment at all.

Cheap, easy, fast, and it works!

I was about to order a $250 videotape exercise program when I realized that the exercises on the infomercial looked a lot like the Royal Canadian Air Force plan I'd followed when I was in my twenties (when I used it to go down four dress sizes). So I started doing this workout again, and noticed a difference in how I felt from Day 1.
I sit at a computer all day, and my doctor's been after me to break those hours up with exercise. Because this routine is so short, doesn't require equipment or changing clothes, and I don't have to drive anywhere to do it, I break up my day with the R.C.A. XBX workout instead of snacking.
Now my only questions are: 1. Why would anyone spend $250 on a videotape exercise plan? and 2: Why did I ever stop doing this?

Great Plan you can get for Free!

I've used this plan to great effect. It really only takes 12-14 minutes per day and you can get to a surprising level of fitness with just these exercises and perhaps some extra walking. It's not a miracle, but it is easy. It requires no equipment and the instructions are easy to follow.

I'd be careful if your back isn't that great-some of the exercises can provide a strain. I'd look elsewhere.

Please, though, unless you are looking for a collector's edition, don't pay money for this plan. You can download the pdf online, there's websites that track your progress and are free. If you can use google, you can find this information for no cost!

The public perception of activity in many sports changed dramatically, with the existence of professionals expanding and the social elite withdrawing from the various roles that they had previously performed as organizers, supervisors and competitors.

This is the first in-depth study of sporting culture in Britain during the first half of the nineteenth century that is based upon sporting periodicals, newspapers and sporting archives. Harvey depicts a society that is not suffering from a severe attack on recreations by commerce, industry and government, but one in which the principal problems experienced stemmed from criminal activity. As such, this book provides a much-needed revision of many misconceptions about the early history of sport in Britain.

An excellent & convenient medical reference as always; & at a relatively inexpensive price.
I particularly liked the many clear concise charts & differential diagnosis & the very good
online section, especially on genetics. The chapters are helpful & very well written as usual
but I especially enjoyed immunology, cancer, infectious disease, dermatology, eye-ENT, The
cardiac section is very good, but I wish there would be space to include a few EKGs.
Also, I miss having the lab reference tables at the end of the book as in my old copy.
Overall this up to date edition rates an "A PLUS" ----- indispensable to a medical library.

A concise authority for general practice medicine

Wonderful book. I believe that this is my third edition of this book. My original one was bought in 1998 because I couldn't afford Harrison's Textbook of Medicine while I was in Physician Assistant school. However, this book was more than adequate then and continues to not disappointment. This book has obviously grown by a few hundred pages since my original one was purchased approximately 20 years ago. It is a great book for studying for re-certification and for reference from a real, proven authority (as opposed to Wikipedia and various other online searches).

Sad Story of Shizophrenia

Sad, but true story of a schizophrenic's descent into madness. It ultimately resulted in the murder and dismemberment of the victim, which was chronicled on The First 48 television series on A&E. It is the story of this young man's life and his struggle and his family's struggle to get him help before a tragedy took place. Unfortunately, as is the case so many times, there was no help until after the murder occurred.

About the Author
Steven J. Heine is Professor of Social and Cultural Psychology and Distinguished University Scholar at the University of British Columbia. His research focuses on meaning, genetic essentialism, and cultural influences on motivations. He has published over seventy articles in such periodicals as Science, Nature, Behavioral and Brain Sciences, and Psychological Review. He received the Distinguished Scientist Early Career Award for Social Psychology from the American Psychological Association in 2003 and the Career Trajectory Award from the Society of Experimental Social Psychology in 2011. He lives with his family in Vancouver.

Good overview of some important content in cultural psychology

Good overview of some important content in cultural psychology. New edition took out lots of stuff on attachment and rightly so as there isn't a lot of evidence to support most of it. What I don't like is the narcissistic use of personal experience. Also, can you say SELF-CITATIONS? Heine presents the research as if he invented the field.
