Better than Freeze n' Cherry

I and many others have been falsely pertuating the myth that Freeze and Cherry is THE coursebook for serious hydrogeologists. Well, the time has come to debunk that myth. After you pick up a copy of Charlie Fitts text, Groundwater Science, "mirror, mirror on the wall will reveal who has the best groundwater science text of all, and it ain't FnC."

For those non-risk takers out there, just browse on over to the publisher's companion website and read the first chapter and the first couple of pages of all the book for yourself. While you are there you see published reviews of this book and a whole lot of stuff to make instructors happy, like 100 book illustrations on powerpoint and the complete solutions manual. Of course, these are ONLY for instructors and students aren't savvy enuf to find them by themselves. If you don't think this is THE Best textbook on GW Science, go ahead and do your own review. And by the way, it is a lot cheaper than anything else out there, so you can feel good about keeping some $ in your students' pockets.

Very nice text for undergraduates or grad students

I used this text book a few years back when I taught a class titled "Groundwater Engineering" at Texas A&M University. I found the text to be organized well, to cover all the "right" topics (i.e., the topics that I wanted to cover in my class), to be written clearly, and to have just about the right amount of mathematics and equations. I used this text for a graduate-level class, but I think it could be used by senior undergraduates as well. It has been a few years now since I taught the class, but if I do teach it again, I am pretty sure I will continue to use this text.

Charlie Fitts (the author) is my teacher

This book is easy to read and provides a great introduction to groundwater science. Charlie is my teacher, we use his book, he is very open to suggestions and is coming out with another addition soon. The text is readable and has a good balance of introduction to a subject, the math of the subject from an geology and engineering perspective, and case studies of the topic. I recommend this book for groundwater.

Great Krav Maga Book For Beginners Like Me

This introduction to the krav maga martial art covers a brief history, the basics of the philosophy, and beginner strikes, blocks, and kicks. The creators of this book stress that it is not a substitute for training with a certified krav maga trainer. I found it to be a good introduction if you’re considering getting into krav maga seriously, or if you wanted a refresher. I also found there was plenty of practical advice on basic self defense for anyone.

The book then goes into describing basic blocks, strikes, and kicks. More difficult moves are also described, such as fighting on the ground. If you’re getting mugged on an evening walk, this could be where your fight ends up and it’s good to have some practical advice about how to get out of it. The book also goes over options if you’re facing an armed opponent.

Over all, I was very satisfied with this book. It provided more info than I was expecting, considering the short length of it. If you’re wondering if krav maga is for you, then this is a good way to check it out.

It's good to know that krav maga is designed for problem ...

Krav Maga is a system of survival, a system that deals with safety issues on a personal basis. When we are in the position of a real attack, there is only one form of defense that can help us that has minimum amount if injury to our self and that is Krav Maga. This training focuses on simple techniques for self-defense using the natural reactions of the body. Self-defense is something that everybody should learn, especially with the current situations in our surrounding.

This book aims to give us an idea of what may happen to us if someone attack us and we response back with the techniques that we learn on Krav Maga. On my personal opinion, i think its much better if the author includes some illustrations or photos that shows how every move is made for better understanding.

But overall, this book is an awesome source of information.

Taking caution

You never know when you're going to get attacked and if you learn self defense afterwards you will feel stupid for not doing it earlier. I know from experience, and before I learned self defense I thought for sure I could defend myself or manage somehow to get away unharmed. The reality is always very different and it is important to be always prepared. There are many self defense methods out there and it is important to find one that works for you. I have read up on many different self defense methods and Krav Manga is one I find works for me. This book is just an introduction to this form of self defense. Books can teach you a lot, but this is something you're going to have to train for physically, but this book goes a long way to getting you there.

SUPERB OVERVIEW OF JAPANESE WRITING SYSTEM

The book contains a very short but meaty introduction to the Japanese writing system. It covers the several types of Japanese alphabet, Katakana, Hiragana, Ro-omaji & Kanji and provides with information on the origin for the names for these different writing systems in the Japanese language. For instance, for the the word Kanji, which is one of the most daunting systems for many Japanese language students, it breaks down the word in two; Kan & Ji, showing the meaning for Kan= Chinese & Ji= Character. Therefore, Kanji simply means Chinese characters and so on with the other writing systems, Hiragana, etc.
Also, it shows how to write them and a history and etymological background for the Japanese alphabet.
What it shone through the book was the calligraphic examples given and the photos all along.
It's a very complete work the authours did for this title and as a guide for someone who's into calligraphy or even learning the language from scratch is purely grand.

Shodo is one of my interests, being a student of it now for a couple of years.

This book is very useful for learning the basics of hiragana and katakana. It goes stroke by stroke and does a good job of providing details about each. The order, along with the style is provided.

I would have liked to have seen more kanji. Other than that, it is a useful resource.

saved me as a medical student!!!

I have used all three volumes of this book as a medical student, pathologist, adjunct faculty member, and medical writer. It saved my bacon!!! As I'm visually oriented I found a way to also stand an anatomy atlas up while reading it --I'd recommend looking at several atlases and picking the one you like the best. In the 70's as a student, I used Grant's and Szentagothai. Today many of my students use Netter.

I also recommend making simple sketches as one reads. As most students have time constraints, keep them as simple as possible; a couple of lines suffice. The simple sketches help in retaining a mental image of the structures.

Using this approach, I consistently scored better than ninety per cent.

Excellent Bedtime Reading!

When I first got the dissector, I imagined it was going to be cumbersome and that I'd need to sit with a pencil and paper to diagram but instead Cunningham's text is a real pleasure to read. It's effortless to take in the details of dissection from the way it is simply and clearly presented in this text. I don't know what other dissectors are like but I suppose I would like a modern look to the diagrams, though this will do.

About the Author
John Rutter was born in London in 1945 and studied music at Clare College, Cambridge. His compositions embrace choral, orchestral, and instrumental music, and he has edited or co-edited various choral anthologies, including four Carols for Choirs volumes with Sir David Willcocks and the Oxford Choral Classics series. From 1975 to 1979 he was Director of Music at Clare College, and in 1981 he formed his own choir, the Cambridge Singers. He now divides his time between composition and conducting and is sought after as a guest conductor for the world's leading choirs and orchestras. Born in 1919, David Willcocks began his musical career as a chorister at Westminster Abbey, later winning scholarships to Clifton College and King's College, Cambridge. Following war service, he was elected Fellow of King's College, and later became Organist of Salisbury and Worcester Cathedrals, conducting the Three Choirs Festival whilst at Worcester. Willcocks returned to King's College, Cambridge as Director of Music from 1957-1974, with the first collection of his arrangements in the Carols for Choirs series publishing in 1961. He was Director of Music at the Royal College of Music from 1974-1984, and was knighted in the Queen's Silver Jubilee Honours List in 1977. Willcocks also conducted The Bach Choir for 38 years, retiring in 1998. Sir David died in September 2015.

The masters do it again!

I had the pleasure of participating in a workshop with David Willcocks, and received this book as part of it. It was first published in 1987, but Sir David had some amusing anecdotes to share about how he and John Rutter, another name to reckon with in choral music circles, put it together.
This is what I like about it:
* These gentlemen are giants in the English choral music scene, and personify the English choral tradition in everything they do. So it's a pleasure to find that they have included many carols from other countries, as well as the English ones. It's very hard to find non-English-language carols, so this is a nice little collection.
* Their 4-part arrangements are imaginative but easy enough to sight-sing.
* It also includes a listing of church festivals other than Christmas, with the names and page numbers of carols that would be appropriate for each.
* For ease of navigation as you're singing, the verses are in Roman type while the refrains are in italics.
* For reasons that are not clear, they have chosen to include the text in the original language in some cases, but not all. The foreign language texts are immediately under the English translations, so you can sing in either language.
* At the very end of the book is the order of service for the traditional Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, with instructions on the appropriate rank of each person to read, from chorister to bishop.
If you are only going to buy one carol book, this and the Oxford Book of Carols are the best ones to consider. The Oxford has more in it, and is hugely more expensive, so I recommend this one! it'll take you several Christmasses to sing your way through it.

Lucked out! Most of your choir carols in it and David Willcocks pencil instructions

This carol book has terrific carols and some very unusual ones. They range from easy to hard so most choirs can benefit from them. It actually has an outline and readings from the Service of Lessons and Carols which could be very valuable for the music director and church leader.

My particular used copy just happened to have notes in it from David Willcocks himself. Can you imagine!!! This was just too good to be believed. I love nothing more than this service of lessons and carols, so the best is here. There are also some Easter Carols --worth the price.

Absolutely marvelous collection with wonderful descants and interesting arrangements. I have given copies to many people because I love this book so MUCH!!! If you've ever lived in England, or ever loved CDs of King's College Choir or St. John's College Choir from Cambridge, England, you will discover the arrangements in this great book!

I read Jayne Conway's first novel, "What if I Fly?" pretty much on a whim and liked it quite a bit -- surprisingly so, in fact, since romances aren't usually my thing. But she won me over, and so I had no hesitation diving headlong into book two -- "As It Seems" -- and once again I was rewarded.

There is unquestionably a certain tone to both of Ms. Conway's novels to date: a strong sense of place, the challenges of finding and keeping love, devotion to family and friends, being hurt and searching for solace, redemption and peace. But "As It Seems" takes these themes further. The characters are fuller, the descriptions richer, the ultimate payoff greater. I really enjoyed the first book, but this second one shows a writer growing even more in her craft.

I realize this review doesn't tell you all that much about the plot of "As It Seems" or how it unfolds. But I'll leave that to other reviewers and the book jacket. Better yet, explore it for yourself.

Not all is as it seems

I remember reading an advice column in which the adviser - Ann Landers, probably - said that people treat you the way you let them treat you, and if you accept certain disrespects or poor behavior, then you have taught those who inflict that upon you that you will accept it.

As I read this book, I kept thinking about that, wishing there was some way I could shout this advice to Libby.

She and Ted have been married over a dozen years, and Libby considers their marriage to be good. Passionate, even. They have frequent and climatic sex, as frequent as they can, anyway, considering Ted's travel schedule. Parents to two children, Libby heads toward forty feeling happy and content.

The first dent in the armor of her marriage is enough to fill Libby with rage and impotence. She and Ted cannot agree on something that will alter their family tremendously. Ted wants it, while Libby vehemently disagrees. As concerning and potentially damaging as this is, it seems like a non-issue compared to the next, deeper, more painful and frightening dent.

It is this second one that alerts Libby to the truths about her marriage, things she has overlooked and ignored. She was happy. Ted was happy. They were raising kind, considerate children, and they lived in a well-to-do neighborhood. They were comfortable and secure. But this fissure, something Libby stumbles upon accidentally, could break them. Whether it does or not depends on Libby's response.

Libby is a likable character. For all of her wealth and privilege, she is far from being a snob. In fact, she resists moving to the tony neighborhood Ted chose because she fears becoming a Stepford wife. She has good friends, and it's clear that she is a good mother. She's good. But Libby is also not nearly as strong as you want her to be. She is not, as the title suggests, as it seems. You expect her to be somewhat steely: Ted travels a lot, which puts the burden of taking care of their children while juggling her job solely upon her. She is the disciplinarian, and she accepts no breaches of protocol. Yet when faced with these two dents - the second one in particular - Libby concedes to Ted. You will lose patience with her. You will be furious and frustrated with her. I sure was.

As for Ted, well. Ted actually is exactly as he seems. Selfish, narcissistic, and far weaker than his wife.

One thing Libby discovers is the importance of friends. She has two upon whom she relies quite heavily, but even then, there may be some things that are not as they seem. Libby also learns that love itself is not as it seems. You think you know what love is, and you think you know what your marriage is, until you realize you don't.

I liked this book. I like the way Jayne Conway tells her story, alternating between Libby's and another character's perspectives. I didn't like how she wrote Libby, only because I didn't want Libby to be so weak. But then it turned out that Libby is not as she seems, and Conway's characterization of her made sense.

Realistic portrayal of betrayal and its aftermath

As It Seems revolves around 2 married couples: Libby Fitzgerald (girl next door type) lives with Ted and their kids, Emma and Nate right next door to Truman Whitaker (Mr. Perfect) and his wife Caroline and their 2 daughters, Sadie and Bette. Caro and Ted are the workaholic breadwinners while Libby and Tru are both stay at home parents who share a close friendship. The past 12 years of marriage have seemed perfect until the illusions come crashing down.

As It Seems deals with betrayal and everything that comes in its aftermath: insecurity, mistrust, self-doubt, anger and depression. It is also about seeing what was in front of you all along. The story is realistic and the writing fluid.

I did enjoy As It Seems although it was difficult to read at times. This was due to the emotions stirred in me as I read and not due to the writing itself. This is the first story I have read by this author but it will not be the last.
