Good Writing, Questionable Plot

"Sequestered Hearts" masterfully describes the inner turmoil of a woman with a serious emotional problem. Cori Saxton (or sometimes Cory, like on page 23) was a bed-hopping playgirl when she thought she was flawless. But when a flaw appeared, she totally withdrew from life (kind of the opposite of people like Christopher Reeve or Michael J. Fox, whose bravery provides hope and inspiration).

Cori wonders how anyone can love her if she is not perfect. We're talking angst here. If you get the feeling that I don't have a lot of affection for Cori, you're right. But there are lessons of love and tolerance to be learned, and this book provides them quite effectively via Bennett McClain, the other protagonist, who struggles with her own problems related to past tragedies.

The book doesn't merit five stars because the story is not fully developed. But it definitely deserves more than three stars because the writing is good. Given a less preachy and more realistic plot line, this author could most likely do much better. I will probably give her next book a try.

There Are No Guarantees In Love

Erin Dutton has delivered a real winner with SEQUESTERED HEARTS. Artist Cori Saxton has seemingly dropped off the planet. Many reporters have tried to find out why, but none have succeeded. That is, until Bennett McClain makes an attempt. The unrelenting Bennett finds her way into Cori's personal space by agreeing to do all sorts of crazy things - like following her on a semi-primitive camping adventure - to prove how badly she wants the story. Neither woman expects what they discover about the other. In fact, the more Bennet finds out about Cori, the less she wants to fulfill her assignment and the more she wants to protect the artist. Cori fears she's shared too much and refuses to let her heart out of its cage.

Dutton delivers a great story with an unexpected twist. The character development is confined between the book's cover, but it's done so well this reader can't complain. The author takes the reader on a true roller coaster ride as the protagonists experience emotional highs and lows, the scenery is great, and many questions are left unanswered until the last few pages - effectively keeping the reader on the edge of her proverbial seat. Nice job.

There was a story here to tell, I can't find it!

There was a story here, that might of worked, if only it was written.
I did not like the two main characters - they are self absorbed,unreal and cold.
I'm surprised the author liked them.
I would think the author should like at least one character.
I felt this book was put through a strainer.
The Radclyffe formula was used, Since she is the Head of BSB.
Her world always evolve around the rich and famous who might have a serious issue to deal with. It all gets solved like an annoying hang nail.
Snip! and it's all better. Now we can move to the bedroom.

Through the strainer out comes a book of two selfish women who have no redeeming qualities, and really have no reason to be together.
I bought none of it.

As someone who lives with MS. I was disappointed how Erin dealt with the diagnoses and the grieving process. Or rather how she DIDN'T deal with it.

Must be nice to always be so rich, beautiful and breath taking in a book that tries to deal with a serious topic.
They seem to solve it in no time.
Erin Dutton loses the point somehwere in between the sheets and lost me as a reader.

BSB books are known for there sex scenes, which at one time was fresh and new. Now, they have become the main plot, the sub plot is thrown in to keep you turning pages to get to the next sex scene.
BSB has become a formula publisher of cookie cutter books,
They don't seem to allow many authors free to write a good story and fill many pages (The mighty $$ wins again)

I think the original manuscript is the true book Erin wanted published.
At least that's what I like to imagine happened.;-)

I could be wrong and this book offered me nothing and no interest in trying her other books.

Mass-mentality is the Unconscious played out on the global scale, and if left to its own devices, it will continue to produce tragedies similar in scale to what the human race experienced in the two world wars. The antidote, Jung argues, is self-knowledge. This is not philosophical self-knowledge, but rather psychological self-knowledge - a reckoning with one's animal instincts, one's shadow, one's dreams and fantasies. Ultimately, Jung says self-knowledge must involve a spiritual experience - an experience of tradition religious truths as relevant in one's own life. Only this kind of experience will protect a person from the trap of mass-mentality; moreover, the development of culture and perhaps even the survival of the race depend on such individuals who can resist mass-mentality when it is strongest. For Jung, the hope of the human race and the world at large depended ultimately on the inner work individuals do in their most intimate inner world. For Jung, the personal is the political, but in a much more profound way than that in which anyone else has ever used that phrase.

The power to stand against the World

_In this book Jung correctly predicted that Communism had to collapse from within. No one else saw that coming. Why should they? For, as he points out, the mass state had all the force of the big battalions on their side- politics, science, and technology were their natural allies. And yet they collapsed.

_Should we rejoice in this? Why? Jung points out that the West is every bit as materialistic as our former Communist opponents. Our spiritual base is gone- in the place of true religion we have aging cults that serve the status quo. There is no inner power there. Every place Jung uses the term Communist, you can substitute Corporate and you have the same animal. That is because both are hierarchical structures where the individual counts for nothing. Indeed, the self-knowledge or individualization that would produce true men and women capable of standing up to the hierarchy is actively discouraged. They are trapped in the illusion of statistical man and of the organization- neither of which really exist. Only a few at the top can exercise the power of a true individual, and even they are usually no more than mouthpieces for the undeveloped masses and their unconscious drives.

_The hope for Jung lies in true religion. The freedom and autonomy of the individual depends on deep inner experience of a metaphysical nature. This is not "faith"; it is direct knowing. Even the deepest faith may melt away with time and circumstances- but not direct experience. It is only this that gives the individual the power to stand up to mass tyranny- and to the World itself. When you haven't made this breakthrough (which requires deep introspection, effort, and, yes, suffering) then other things get deified and charged with demonic energy- money, work, political influence...

_The shallow, rootless mass-man and his organizations are always going to lose, eventually, to the man with deep religious connection to the Macrocosm. Jung the Gnostic, Jung the Christian, Jung the Alchemist, Jung the Magician saw this. The individuated man has the cosmic correspondence within himself.

BEST INTRO TO JUNG

The only book by Carl Jung that I could read (as opposed to study), and easily understand and appreciate. Although written at the time of the cold war, his thoughts on the individual, religion and the state are as relevant today and truly timeless. I recommend The Undiscovered Self as the best introduction to one of the greatest psychologists and philosophers of the 20th century.

About the Author

Steven G. Laitz is Associate Professor of Music Theory and Affiliate Faculty Member in Chamber Music at the Eastman School of Music, and serves on the piano faculty at the Chautauqua Institution. He has received various teaching awards, has presented and published work on nineteenth-century music and pedagogy, and is the author of The Complete Musician: An Integrated Approach to Tonal Theory, Analysis, and Listening, Second Edition (OUP, 2007).

Christopher Bartlette is Assistant Professor of Music at Binghamton University. His research in music cognition and performance has led to articles and presentations at national and international conferences in music theory, perception, and cognition.

excellent, just like its 'bigger brother'

this is a condensed version of 'The Complete Musician' by the same author. It is really good because basically I get two versions of the lessons: this book has a condensed version, while The Complete Musician offers an extended version of the same topic.
And that REALLY is great, because by reading from both books, I learn even better.

Also, 'Graduate....', like The Complete Musician, comes with a DVD recorded by a real orchestra. This teaching method incorporates a serious technological advancement by simply including the musical examples. It is really helpful to read about a concept and to immediately being able to listen and understand by listening.

My only gripe are:

1. not all examples are recorded on dvd. I don't see why not, especially considering that it would greatly aid the review of any topics at later times (more often than not, you have to review things you are learning, it's normal)

2. the examples are mostly orchestral. I wish they had a version for easy to intermediate keyboard players as well.

3. no exercises at all, for that you have to get the workbook. And the workbook, as far I know ( I don't have it) do not have 'possible solutions' to the assignemnts.

However, these books are the best, bar none. I love that dvd thrown in there, as it's music examples are too important to be ignored.

As mentioned, I would also like to see solutions to any exercises present in the workbook, because I think a lot can be learned by comparing my solution with one by the authors. It would be the next best thing from taking lessons directly from them.

Also, I highly recommend you get both books. For a modest price you are essentially buying all the standard music knowledge required by any serious student or pro musician.

Does exactly what the title says; however, lacking in correct examples and solutions.

On the positive, this book is exactly what it makes itself out to be - a graduate-level review of tonal theory. It spends little precious page-space on concepts like counterpoint and fugue. It also make no effort to address post-tonal theory. And, as other reviewers have pointed out, it makes no effort to explain concepts on a basic fundamental level, so this is not a book for someone learning these ideas for the first time. However, this book does exactly what it sets out to do, and it does it well.

I have one major gripe, however. As a student beginning graduate study, I purchased this book and its companion workbook for personal study. No one is looking over my shoulder checking my work. I suspect that at the graduate level many of us are self-motivated. In many cases, I would read a few pages, attempt an assignment, and be left wondering just how good my answers were. I would have loved to see possible answers to the workbook exercises and more correct study examples in the text.

I know that the traditional idea is to hide the answers from the students so they don't cheat. I didn't become a grad student to cheat. I came to learn. Whether taking a class or learning on my own, I would expect that there won't be a prof leaning over my every assignment and marking it up in red. I would learn a lot more efficiently if I could check my own work. I would stay that this book and it's companion workbook would easily be 5-star materials if they fixed this issue; as is, the materials are a bit gimpy.

Portable Common Practice Reference

This text is a handy reference to Common Practice harmony and form. Also nice is the small size and weight, which makes it easy to lug around in a backpack, unlike larger harmony texts. I would not recommend learning harmony from it (I much prefer the approach in Theory of Harmony for self study), though it is nice to have around to look up details on sequences or applied dominants or so forth.

Brody delves right into the historical fiction field made so trendy by works like The Da Vinci Code and picks up where they leave off. The novel is extremely well-researched and self-aware, and Brody does a terrific job of wrapping his research in a fast-paced thrill ride that will feel far more like an action film than an academic paper, though both elements are distinctly present. That being said, by the end, the reader is uncertain how much of the theory Brody sincerely believes and how much just makes for a good story. Fans of conspiracy novels will enjoy this but it will be difficult for the average reader to separate this from the Da Vinci Code phenomenon and appreciate this on its own merits.

Great reading, great resource.

Any review of this book by a member of the St. Clair family may be viewed with some skepticism. However, I assure you, I am not a 'true believer' of the Prince Henry St. Clair story. This is why my family held the Atlantic Conference this past Fall in Halifax, Nova Scotia - to find the real evidence of early trans-Atlantic voyaging. There, I was lucky enough to meet David and receive an advance copy of his book.

David's writing style is thorougly enjoyable, but this book goes much further in that it's also a tremendous resource on all matters of this unsuual story of Templar history, the St. Clair family, diffusionism, petroglyphs, and much more. Being a member of the family who may descend from Jarl Henry St. Clair, it's difficult to show me new information, but Mr. Brody does and frames it with a knowledge of the plot lines of history that put it all in perspective.

I highly recommend this book.

An interesting blend of historical fact and theory...

Cabal of The Westford Knight: Templars at the Newport Tower by David S. Brody was another book I got via an offer from a publisher. While the whole Da Vinci Code genre burned out rather quickly for me, this book offered a unique twist in that it was set on American shores. Add in the fact that all the historical sites and artifacts actually do exist, and you get an interesting blend of quasi-history told in a adventure thriller plot.

Cameron Thorne is a lawyer in New England, practicing some low-profile law. But a simple visit from an elderly couple changes his whole life (and eventually the history of the last 2000 years). They are being pressured to sell their home and property to a guy from Scotland who won't take no for an answer. Some research shows that this guy is a treasure hunter looking for lost Templar relics that he believes are buried on the elderly couple's property. But before Cameron can get to the bottom of the guy's story, things start going wrong. The treasure hunter ends up murdered, Cameron's life is threatened by black sedans that try to run him over, his dog is killed, and his brother loses his leg in an explosion prior to starting some digging on the couple's property. Seems that more than one group of people want to keep some secrets hidden forever. Cameron meets and teams up with Amanda Spenser, an attractive English lady who is employed by a group of people charged with maintaining artifacts related to a reported visit to America in the late 1300's by Prince Henry Sinclair. There's a shady element of this consortium, and Amanda decides to throw caution to the wind and team up with Cameron to dig into the story deeper than she's been allowed to in the past. The more they dig, the more attention they attract from secret Vatican groups who are willing to do whatever it takes to stop the two from undercovering a story that would rock the foundation of the organized Church...

While I liked the two main characters in the story, they are really there to help tell a historical story that you have to decide whether it's true (thus a conspiracy) or just a number of things that have been given far more meaning than they ever really had. The main contention is that Prince Henry came over to America with a number of treasures he was protecting from capture by the Roman Catholic church. The main treasure they had was evidence that Jesus and Mary Magdalene were married, had a daughter named Sarah, and that bloodline of Jesus still remains to this day. Add in worship of the "Sacred Feminine", Masonic societies, Kaballist groups, the Knights Templar, and many other murky secrets, and it calls into question all of what our modern day religions are based on. What adds realism in Cabal is that all the artifacts and locations used in the book actually do exist, so the story that Brody weaves is based on tales that have some basis in actual fact.

Do I accept everything in this book as actual truth? Not even remotely. But Brody puts an amazing amount of documented facts in Cabal which helps him to build his story and premise quite well. It worked for me on both an adventure level as well as a "should investigate this a little deeper" angle.

Move Over Da Vinci Code!

Nothing paints a mysterious and suspenseful story better than one based on a profound and ancient conspiracy. It is evident that David S. Brody knew this full well when he penned his excellently written and powerfully depicted novel of intrigue, suspicion and adventure titled, Cabal of The Westford Knight: Templars at the Newport Tower. In this fast-paced and thorough treatise on ancient religious rituals and beliefs, Brody has woven together the ancient past and the curious present to create very compelling and believable tale of discovery and revelation.

Mr. Cameron Thorne is a lawyer going about his business. Representing an elderly man and woman who are trying to keep from losing their home, Thorne runs headlong into a mystery that has been hidden from the outside world for centuries. This is not just some family secret. In fact, Cameron Thorne has uncovered a conspiracy that could actually cost him his life. Long suppressed by the Catholic Church, this conspiracy is one that the Church must make sure remains unknown.

As a result of this tumultuous unearthing of ancient actions and deeds, Thorne has no choice but to strike and run, as his pursuers, religious fanatics from two radical groups, seek to hunt him down and silence him. Fortunately, Thorne does not have to fight this battle of wits and intrigue alone. He has the good fortune to meet one British researcher of ancient artifacts, named Amanda. She too is on the run, tracked by the same groups who are seeking to stop Cameron Thorne. Together, they form a bond and a single-purposed plan to tie the fragments of this deadly mystery together, which they gather from many places across the Northeastern part of the United States. These two realize that their enemies have no choice but to stop the two intruders from unearthing their historical secrets. For, if they Thorne and Amanda are finally able to repaint the entire picture, the truths they will have revealed risk shredding the church into pieces.

There is an obvious and appropriate comparison between Davis S. Brody's excellent work and The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown. Though the strength of Dan Brown's work cannot be minimized, I feel that Brody's work is better researched, more believable and that Brody's style and plot possesses more elements that will entice the reader to want to dig into this book until the very last page. I felt as if I was there with these two very intelligent hunters of ancient lore.

The massive amount of research that had to go into this first-class novel must have been staggering. Coming from David S. Brody, great research and explanations one can wrap their hands around is what he does best. His others books, such as The Wrong Abraham, Blood of the Tribe, Unlawful Deeds and America's History are excellent examples of Brody's ability to take readers into another time and place and to make it come alive in our time, today. He has simply carried this tradition of excellence in writing over into this new novel, Cabal of The Westford Knight: Templars at the Newport Tower. If you love intrigue, conspiracy and history all woven together into an action-packed suspense drama with deadly repercussions, then you will love this story.

Move over Da Vinci Code. There is a new novel, now in print, that bears all the makings of a phenomenal literary success. I highly recommend Cabal of The Westford Knight: Templars at the Newport Tower by David S. Brody. It's a read that will keep you reading until the very end.

About the Author
Vandana Shiva is a physicist, world-renowned environmental thinker and activist, and a tireless crusader for economic, food, and gender justice. She is the author and editor of many influential books, including Making Peace with the Earth, Earth Democracy, Soil Not Oil, Stolen Harvest, Water Wars, and Globalization’s New Wars. Dr. Shiva is the recipient of more than twenty international awards, among them the Right Livelihood Award (1993); the John Lennon-Yoko Ono Grant for Peace (2008); The Sydney Peace Prize (2010); and the Calgary Peace Prize (Canada, 2011). In addition, she is a board member of the World Future Council and one of the leaders and board members of the International Forum on Globalization (whose other members include Jerry Mander, Edward Goldsmith, Ralph Nader, and Jeremy Rifkin). She travels frequently to speak at conferences around the world.

Well written. Recommended for all Eco-feminists. At times Shiva is harsh and critical of science and westernized countries. She is also overly critical of women within the United States. But overall, it is an eye-opener.

Her biographical description reads "Dr. Vandana Shiva trained as a Physicist at the University of Punjab, and completed her Ph.D. on the ‘Hidden Variables and Non-locality in Quantum Theory’ from the University of Western Ontario, Canada." The reviewer who says this is not true should provide proof; otherwise, we have no reason to disbelieve Dr. Shiva.
