About the Author

Toby Hemenway is the author of the first major North American book on permaculture, Gaia’s Garden: A Guide to Home-Scale Permaculture. After obtaining a degree in biology from Tufts University, Toby worked for many years as a researcher in genetics and immunology, first in academic laboratories at Harvard and the University of Washington in Seattle, and then at Immunex, a major medical biotech company. At about the time he was growing dissatisfied with the direction biotechnology was taking, he discovered permaculture, a design approach based on ecological principles that creates sustainable landscapes, homes, and workplaces. A career change followed, and Toby and his wife spent ten years creating a rural permaculture site in southern Oregon. He was associate editor of Permaculture Activist, a journal of ecological design and sustainable culture, from 1999 to 2004. He teaches permaculture and consults and lectures on ecological design throughout the country. His writing has appeared in magazines such as Whole Earth Review, Natural Home, and Kitchen Gardener. He is available for workshops, lectures, and consulting in ecological design.

Serious Permaculture Knowledge for the Urban & Suburban Greenie

When Toby Hemenway and his wife moved to the country to live a bucolic life in a sustainable, environmental way, what he learned was quite the opposite of being more environmentally sound.

In fact, their ecological footprint turned out to be far larger than if they lived in the city. They needed a car to go anywhere, services and stores were beyond walking distance miles away, and their social lives were severely limited. When Hemenway added up the impact of his country lifestyle, he had to admit there was a better way to live a greener life – move back to an urban area, and later, write a book about it. The Permaculture City: Regenerative Design for Urban, Suburban, and Town Resilience is that book.

The Permaculture City integrates the concepts and practices of permaculture within an urban setting. Granted, the city is often the last place one thinks of as environmental, but Hemenway says,

“The human-nature bond can be lost in cities if we're not careful, and I think we go somewhat insane without it. Cities can help keep their surrounding regions both ecologically and economically healthy by fostering connections that are intended to do that, rather than ignore or simply exploit their surroundings.”

According to Hemenway, a truly healthy city incorporates a diversity of offerings that address the physical, social, and emotional needs of the dweller; his book bridges the gap between city and country, and is rich in the history of how our current urban models came about, where they went wrong, and how they can be changed and improved.

Hemenway’s strength is his ability to overlay historical fact to bring greater clarity to the current problems plaguing the modern urban space. From the very first chapter, he walks the reader through the life cycle of cities and their evolution in response to social change; this gives the reader a clearer perspective on the “why” and “how” behind the transportation and social dynamics of urban environments. His book is chock full of examples and explanations that illustrate each chapter’s purpose, often going beyond the basic details so the reader has no choice but to understand what Hemenway is so passionately writing about.

The social capital, or the human interactive value, of urban areas is a strong focal point of the book. Hemenway highlights the ideas of Jane Jacobs, William Whyte, and Kevin Lynch, individuals who strove to integrate and not isolate the elements that comprise a well-rounded city, while weaving permacultural aspects throughout. His suggestions truly honor Jacobs’ “village in the city” concept that the most vibrant ecosystem in the urban environment is the human one. When asked about the motivating factors behind writing The Permaculture City, Hemenway stated:

“the most interesting work in permaculture, to me, was being done in cities…growing food is easy compared to learning how to work with other people constructively.”

But Hemenway includes that toolset as well; chapters 3 and 4 of the book are essentially a permaculture design course (PDC), covering the basics from designing a small backyard garden space to implementing energy efficient changes that can save money and improve one’s quality of life. Hemenway offers intense, effective environmental options for the urban homeowner, with everything scaled down to individual lot size.

The integration of urban areas with the surrounding bioregion is also highlighted. Ancient civilizations integrated their services and fuel production, transport and defensibility into a cohesive whole that enabled them to have resilience and stability, even in times of war and famine; Hemenway discusses how that ancient wisdom can be applied to our modern cities, which are often geometric with little to no thought about how the human experience integrates into the model. City dwellers would have a considerably different user experience if land developers and city planners had copies of The Permaculture City as mandatory reading. What determines whether a city is successful in being an overall great place to live often does not come down to cost; it comes down to a design the meets human needs and builds social capital.

This is not Hemenway’s first book rodeo; he’s a well-known heavy-hitter in the Permaculture world, and has a significant list of published material, such as Gaia’s Garden: A Guide to Home-Scale Permaculture, and other works. His writing style is straightforward and clear, and The Permaculture City is not a coffee table picture book that trades information for eye candy. Hemenway has done his research, skillfully delineating the ways an individual can change their environmental impact even while living in a concrete jungle, and illustrates it all with strong visuals. In short, The Permaculture City: Regenerative Design for Urban, Suburban, and Town Resilienceis an excellent resource for anyone not living in the countryside but wants to do right by Mother Nature. Your culture not just your garden.

This is a delightful book for both the avid permaculturist (or "Permie") or the person wanting to understand this natural design process. I've immediately applied principles from this book to my own home environment. I also highly appreciate Toby's description of permaculture in the social context, with examples. I used his approach to advocate for the inclusion of resiliency, leverage, and feedback in informing how legal services are delivered in rural Washington. Permaculture is more than your garden; it's about systematic thinking. Toby communicates that brilliantly. This is a must read for project managers, executive directors, and managers.

About the Author
Born Luigi Santomauro in 1951, Lou Di Palo grew up behind the counter at Di Palo’s in New York’s Little Italy and the Italian-American neighborhood of Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. Beloved by both his customers and those in the food community and media, Lou Di Palo is considered to be a preeminent Italian food expert. In addition to running Di Palo’s (for forty years and counting) with his brother, Sal, and sister Marie, he works as an Italian food educator and consultant for supermarkets, trade associations, and even Italy itself, which has given him many awards for his efforts to educate Americans in the ways of Italian food. He travels all over the United States, speaking about Italian food products on behalf of such regions or groups as the Consortium of Grana Padano or Speck from Alto Adige. With this, his first book, he hopes to bring his knowledge and passion to those who can’t make the trip to visit Di Palo’s in person.

Rachel Wharton has nearly twenty years of experience as a writer, reporter, and editor, including four years as a features food reporter at the New York Daily News. She is a contributing editor of Edible Manhattan and Edible Brooklyn magazines, and a James Beard Foundation award-winning food writer with a master’s degree in food studies from New York University.

Incredible History of Italian food and life/Incredible Family

This book is so heart-felt throughout. You even want to be part of Lou's family. Seriously. The information is so well researched that you feel you have taken an advanced course in Italian life and Italian food. It is not a once-read book, it is a book you go back and read again and again, as you don't want to miss a part of anything this man has written. I recently brought my book to Di Palo's in hopes of meeting Lou and having him sign my book. The three siblings - Lou, Sal & Marie - were all working diligently behind the counter as a team. Lou and Sal were so anxious to please the customers, to share various kinds of cheeses, to answer any questions about products. These are genuinely nice people. I just wish I had brought a larger cooler to take home more products than I purchased, especially the most wonderful ricotta and fresh mozzarella I have ever tasted. My time was limited, or else I would have stayed in that store to observe and absorb so much of the culture this family unit was exhibiting, the kind you only read about in books anymore, as they rarely exist in real life. It was like stepping back in time to the turn of the 20th Century. If you can't get to New York City to go to Di Palo's, read this book. Trust me - you will either drive to NYC, take a bus or plane to experience in person what this book is all about. Can't wait to go back.

A monument to the Little Italy of bygone days when Mott St meant an Italian Feast 24/7!

Lou and his brother and sisters were my first friends when I was a child in the 1950's. Back then Louie and I were more interested in throwing "dirt bombs" onto 70th Street in Bensonhurst and looking for nickels so that we could go to the candy store to play "The Flying Purple People Eater" on the juke box. Good times when little boys were able to explore their territory. My mother's family was comprised of fish monger immigrants from Sicily and similar to Lou's family being milk and cheese peddlers in southern Italy, there was an immediate connection between our families.
Lou has put together a book that is much more than a cookbook. It is a historical monument to the generation of immigrants who came to America and did what they knew best.....and better than any commercial mass manufacturing enterprise could ever duplicate or even create to compare with the real thing. He teaches what real quality is and where he finds it for all to share. Rare to our generation of transient children and grandchildren of immigrants, Lou and family are a gift to the people of New York.....a treasure of what once was but is rare to find today. A family who loves what they do and enjoy passing their knowledge to their faithful customers....always willing to give samples describe why their delicacies taste the way they do and AND.....you don't have to be Italian......but it helps! Which reminds me....what ever happened to Levy's Real Jewish Rye?

Perfect book for anyone that wants to know a little history about the delicacies they eat. My favorite part is that Mr. Lou DiPalo answers all the questions we are always embarrassed to ask. And remember a great Espresso is all about the crema, 20-25 seconds is all it needs! Thanks Lou.

What I've been looking for!

As a result of the resurgence in Sherlock's popularity, there are a growing number of books that are making their attempt to teach Sherlock's Method or the way that he thinks. I myself have bought Mastermind, How to think like Sherlock, The Deduction Guide, Taz Rai's The Art of Deduction (not the art of deduction book here on amazon), The Elementary Methods of Sherlock Holmes, Snoop, The Secret Life of Pronouns, I've watched Sherlock, Elementary, House MD, Criminal Minds, and read Conan Doyle's, stories, scoured blogs and the internet for more pertinent information, read extensive information on various subjects and have come to a conclusion.

In order to sort the relevant from the irrelevant, the good from the bad, you would have to write your own book on the subject. in fact i plan to, in a different area, because i wouldn't want to be counter productive, but this book is very similar to the one i would've written, at least the first one.

The author uses examples from the canon for the reader to observe Holmes using particular parts of his method, and then teaching you how to apply it in the real modern day world, and suggests a wealth of practical exercises designed to improve your natural abilities to do the same. these are not brain teasers, or anything like it. there are specific observation training exercises, listening exercises etc. if you've read any of the above books mentioned chances are that this is what you've been looking for, i know, i was.

It's concise, and to the point, and doesn't bite off more than it can chew. and as an added bonus, the author challenges the reader to discover a secret that he has embedded in the book, in true mystery story spirit! the secret, while not a major revelation of any sort, as he says "you already know it", can provide a motivation in the student that could be absent had he/she not endeavored.

If you're a fan of Sherlock Holmes and have ever wanted to buy a book that could help you do what Sherlock does, this is without a doubt, one that get's a very high recommendation.

FOR THE SHERLOCK HOLMES IN ALL OF US!

As a HUGE longtime fan of Sherlock Holmes I can truthfully say I loved the book HOW TO INSTANTLY SIZE UP STRANGERS LIKE SHERLOCK HOLMES BY MAR A WILLIAMS SR. The author took apart piece by piece the "methods" Mr Holmes used to find out the bad guys. What amused me was they arent rocket science folks! Just simple observation and listening skills. In the book he referenced Holmes books when trying to make a point or example. At the last section of the book he challenges you to test your new found knowledge. Reading the book made me want to drag my Sherlock Holmes books to reread and test my new skills!

ROBERT L. MAINARDI is President of Mainardi & Associates, a firm that creates, develops, facilitates, and administers custom training programs in auditing and risk; evaluates, creates, and implements formal audit methodologies; and consults on critical projects. The book offers an integrated step by step approach to its main subject. As a real handbook it starts on the very beginning - the definition of continuous auditing - and then, written in a very comprehensive way, it will map all the important item related with Continuous Auditing.

The book is also wide ranged, meaning that if you want theoretical concepts, you will find them, but it is also a very good "implementation guide".

Not your normal recipes

When you think of paella you bring to mind the traditional dish with chicken and seafood. This book contains other ingredient recipes. If you eat a lot of rice you might be interested in this book. You will not get tired of these dishes.
