About the Author
Susan L. Elrod has degrees in biological sciences from California State University, Chico (B.S., 1986) and genetics from the University of California, Davis (Ph.D., 1995). Graduate work was followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at Novozymes Biotech, Inc., in Davis, California. Her research is focused on the molecular genetics of yeast and filamentous fungal systems, with a particular interest in industrial and environmental applications. She holds three patents and has published in the area of gene cloning and protein expression in Aspergillus oryzae. She has been an assistant professor in the Biological Sciences Department at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, since 1997, where she teaches introductory microbiology, industrial microbiology and biotechnology, molecular genetics, bioinformatics, and the history of biology.
William D. Stansfield has degrees in Agriculture (B.S., 1952), Education (M.A., 1960), and Genetics (M.S., 1962; Ph.D., 1963; University of California at Davis). His published research is in immunogenetics, twinning, and mouse genetics. From 1957 to 1959 he was an instructor in high school vocational in agriculture. He was a faculty member of the Biological Sciences Department of California Polytechnic State University from 1963 to 1992 and is now Emeritus Professor. He has written university-level textbooks in evolution and serology/immunology, and has coauthored a dictionary of genetics.

Information is good, but I've found 20+ errors...

I'm about 400 pages through the book and have found 20+ errors. I have the iBook version, so maybe something was "lost in translation from the source document to the ePub format, but I doubt that's the case. Some errors are as simple as two words run together (such as "agene" instead of "a gene"), and others are blatant errors that will confuse somebody not already familiar with the subject. For example, I came across at least one Punnett square with the wrong nomenclature in the horizontal header cells/vertical header cells (ie: If you're doing a dihybrid cross of "Bb x Bb", they might have put "BB" in the horizontal header boxes and "Bb" in the vertical header boxes (the horizontal being incorrect)). I also found some mathematical errors. If I remember correctly, in figuring out the probability of phenotypes, one of the equations was "3(1/2)(1/2) = 3/8"...simple stuff like that, that if you're paying attention you'll recognize as wrong...but if you're new to genetics and you're a little foggy, might confuse you alot.
I've emailed (20+ times, one for each error found) the editor/contact person at the publisher who is in charge of this book and have not received one reply. Maybe they just don't care.
Overall, the book has a lot of good information and it's well organized.
If you're familiar with the subject, just be on the lookout for errors.
If you're unfamiliar with the subject, maybe contact the publisher to see if they've revised the errors I've submitted to them (Jan 2013). I'd hate to see somebody taking the DAT, MCAT, PCAT, OAT or a Genetics class get something wrong on a test because the book had a typo that changed the student's understanding of the subject.

Great Study Guide!!!

Great supplemental source for your genetics textbook. Sums everything up to read while studying for an exam along with additional problems. Has a bunch of problems with solutions, and plenty to practice with and answers are provided. Highly recommend it.

I really like this book, it has a lot of great practice problems to help you prepare for exams and to make sure you understand the material. This is useful for anyone who wants assistance in a college fundamental genetics course.
