Great For Learning Foreign Languages

My Portuguese teacher in Portugal told me "Those in the know, know that the Pope doesn't speak 30 or more languages. How he manages to speak to millions in their native language is that his sermons are written out in the International Phoentic Alphabet (IPA). Once you learn a little about the pronounciation of the IPA, you can learn a foreign language much easier."

I bought Paul Meier's CD, began using it, and have had a quantum leap improvement in my pronounciation of Portuguese. I wish I had discovered this 40 years ago when I was learning French, German, and Spanish!

Convenient offline tool with broad coverage of IPA symbols & associated sounds

This is a Flash-based tool that provides clear audio for the various sounds of IPA, including the vowels, stops and clicks not typically present in English or other Indo-European languages. It works well on my Mac (haven't tried it on the PC). It also works equally well without the CD, so you can load the contents onto a local directory and run it from there.

It's very easy to use and quite comprehensive. From the main screen, you'll be presented with a longish page of seven sections--consonants (pulmonics), consonants (non-pulmonics), vowels, diacritics, suprasegmentals, diphthongs & triphthongs--both American and British flavors--and other symbols (e.g. labial-velar fricatives, epiglottal sounds and a few others that don't fit neatly into the other charts). There are a few sounds in the vowel section I had problems distinguishing, but that's more likely a problem with my own ears.

Clicking on a symbol plays the associated sound while mousing over the symbol pops up a description. In the case of the vowel chart, mousing over the row/column labels also provides information on articulation--e.g. tongue forward or back, jaws open or closed--which I found helpful on some of the less common vowels (less common for a native speaker of American English, that is). Depending on the symbol, you'll hear up to three different pronunciations based on where the sound appears in a word--as an initial, intra-word or final.

Two small criticisms:
(1) the voice is male; it would have been good to include both male and female speakers for reference, and
(2) a warning in terms of usage: don't click on a new symbol until the audio is finished from your previous selection, or the new audio will play over the current selection. Typically, I'd expect a new selection to cancel the play of the previous before starting, but it's a minor quibble and may simply be an artifact of the Flash environment as opposed to a design flaw. In any case, you will only have to wait a few seconds until it finishes.

Summary: There are online sources for much of this information, but given the breadth of coverage, relatively low cost and clarity of the audio, not to mention the convenience of having a comprehensive source for IPA sounds & symbols when you're offline, this product is a good value.

Donald J. Ford, Ph.D., C.P.T., is a training and performance improvement consultant specializing in instructional design and human resource management. He has worked in the field of human resources for over twenty years. He has developed custom classroom, self-study and web-based training, conducted performance, training needs, competency and job task analyses, facilitated groups, managed improvement projects, taught courses and evaluated results. Dr. Ford holds a B.A. and M.A. in history and a Ph.D. in education, all from UCLA. He has published 35 articles and four books on topics in training, education and management.

In the world of Training and Development, this book is well organized and insightful. This book is somewhat technical, and should be read by those who already have some familiarity with the subject. Ford supplies a thorough and insightful overview of measurement techniques and settles on the ADDIE model (from Instructional Systems Design) as a best practice to organize efforts to measure the effectiveness of training. In addition to providing a literature review of most of the popular design and analysis tools in use in the world of corporate training today, the book also has a valuable 30 page appendix including 16 instructional design tools (deliverables)- templates for designing budgets, sample participant reaction surveys, sample test specifications, etc.
