About the Author
TAMARACK SONG has spent his life studying the world’s aboriginal peoples, apprenticing to Elders, and learning traditional hunter-gatherer survival skills. He currently serves as a consultant for wilderness trekkers around the world, and for organizations such as the National Geographic Society. A must-read for survival enthusiasts

Just finished reading this book and i'm overall impressed!
This book teaches an approach to obtain meat as an alternative to killing animals. I consider this topic as practical niche knowledge you will hardly find in any other book. Tamarack feeds himself and his family since 40 years of non-hunted prey. His experience and practical hunter-gatherer knowledge is what you will find in this book. He explains how to find dead animals, examine the cause of death, how to assess the carcass and how to process each part of it for safe consumption and preserving. Moreover he gives fair warnings when evidence show possible risks.
What i like most of it is that he uncovers long-believed, but wrong folk wisdom. Who believes that smoking preserves meat or that you can live solely on protein will change his mind after reading this! Another big part of this book is how to preserve meat, assess and render fat and how to process pemmican. In doing so, he explains various methods and provides important details in order to succeed.
I recommend this book to any survivalist as it provides essential and practical knowledge which might safe your life.

Concise so you don't have to butcher butchering.

The first time I butchered a roadkill deer, it was truly butchering in the worst sense of the word. I had some old books to go by, but no one had reminded me to follow my intuition, to let the blade flow and to find simpler understandings about how to use the meat in a way that simplified the cutting process.
Every step of that process, from eying up roadkill, to skinning, to cutting, and to cooking or preserving the meat is filled with bits of information and reminders to listen to intuition. Over the years, you pick a lot of that up, but thanks to Tamarack you can read this and really jump ahead in that process.
This is a small book, but that's also it's beauty. When the time comes and you're assessing the situation, you'll certainly be happy that this is so concise. And if you think the subject matter doesn't apply to you, just remember, that electricity won't be on forever. No harm in being prepared.

Well written with all the necessary details given

This guy knows what he's talking about. I have other books on this subject but this well written book gives the little tips you only get from someone who has really been there done that not some rehash of something someone else wrote and sold to you just for profit.
