Humanity the Destroyer

I have just read a long excerpt from this book on the website Longreads, but haven't read the book yet. The impact of the writing is devastating. I know world history pretty thoroughly, and have rarely or never encountered such stunning ecological histories of some of the societies I respect, including the Stone Age, the Sumerians and the Romans. Dawson shows how from the outset in the cave period, man systematically destroyed his environment in a quest for better living. He shows that farming, far from being a convenient shift, was a crisis-driven necessity following the extinction of large meat animals caused by massive overhunting. The very first government, in Sumer, institutionalized systems of oppression of the people, militarization and conquest of neighbors, and destruction of the environment, turning fertile lands into deserts, that still exist today. This came along with Sumerian contributions of the wheel and the basis of organized trade and record-keeping. Later the Romans and their highly efficient world system turned most of the lands they occupied into deserts. You will never look at history and humankind the same way again after reading this book.

About the Author
Originally from Ireland, James is a writer who has spent time living in Germany, Spain, Portugal, France, and the United Kingdom. While living in Germany he broke nearly every single one of these rules, but writing a book about what not to do in Germany means he is able to put each cultural faux pas down to 'research'.��-�Niklas is originally from Germany and has lived in several countries including Sweden and China. After working for a number of international teams at several companies, he realised that his colleagues were both intrigued and humoured by some of the 'German' things he did. Seeing that there was an interest in German mannerisms, he started putting together notes for what would eventually become the published book.

Excellent, funny read with many uncommon insights

So funny and a great tool for Ausl�nder who want to get better acquainted with Germany... I'm an American expat living in Germany so I've read a lot of these kinds of books/essays/etc over the years and this is probably the best one yet. Many regurgitate the same old cliches about Germans being punctual and not crossing the street when the light is red, but German Men Sit Down to Pee has really unique insights--even the title is something that I used to laugh at an old boyfriend for but never realized it was a cultural phenomenon. It's well-written overall, a pleasant, easy read, and has lots of good-to-know anecdotes about bureaucracy, the "administrative police" that give tickets for civil offences, and other subjects that inevitably surprise people that move here from other countries. Great purchase/gift for any newbie to Germany, and also just a funny little guide for anyone who's interested in German culture. I'll be giving it to students and longer-term visitors for sure.

Laugh and Learn

This is a fun but genuinely helpful book that gives newcomers, expats, and visitors to Deutschland good, accurate information and insight about German customs--all while making you chuckle. A pretty fast read, I wish this had been around before I moved to Germany! I had worried that it would just be like reading a few blog posts or top tens on the Internet, but it wasn't. Although some of the information is familiar to me after over 3 years of living here as an expat, I still managed to learn something. The author provides historical and cultural references within his anecdotes, so while the book reads fast and primarily entertains, you *do* walk away feeling like you've learned something. That's important, and I think this book made the grade.

A nice, funny and useful piece of reading

If there’s one country that seems to be the favourite target of several stereotypes, it’s definitely Germany. While some of them are by all means exaggerated, several of them are, in fact, true, to my view at least!
And “German Man Sit Down to Pee...” is definitely quite a collection of them! I’ve experienced myself some of them in the 2 years since I've moved to Germany and I’ll just some up now my “top 10” insights which proved to be perfectly right!
1. Germans DO seem to have every insurance policy available out there
2. Work time is for work (and ALMOST nothing else)
3. You DO have to bring cake on your birthday/thesis presentation/first day in the office/last day in the office
4. Having a hobby is important (and has to be taken as seriously as possible)
5. Germans do “go Dutch when paying in a restaurant” (one of the best inventions ever, although I never heard of it being called “Dutch” before).
6. The sit down when you pee part: I had no clue of this particular one, but after asking around (oh, yes, I did that!!) it turned out to be generally true, at least in what concerns the situation at home.
7. Recycle: they day I moved in my first shared flat (with Germans) and found the different garbage containers: for paper, aluminium waste, biodegradable, plastic and glass (white, green and brown!!) came, in fact, with the great feeling of finally doing the right thing.
8. Cycling is very “in” around here!
9. Nazi jokes are to be avoided: sometimes, over a beer or two, this topic might have come up a few times, but, indeed it was NEVER a topic for jokes.
10. There is an “asparagus season”! At least in Bavaria!
While I’ve read many exaggeration on this topic, this book seems to be quite accurate. Surprisingly enough, however, most of the Germans I’ve met are not so keen on punctuality, quite a few of them have a thing for crossing the street on red light and most of the people I’ve come across are really (really) polite and nice in their speech even upon disapproval.
However, I really enjoyed the reading: funny, easy to follow, well researched! As a newcomer to Germany, it is interesting to compare the authors’ experiences, views and conclusions with my own! It is definitely a useful and pleasant read. I highly recommend it to anyone planning on coming/moving to Germany!

A better title might be Jewish Mysticism for Dummies. Zetter, sometime contributor to the Los Angeles Times and Jerusalem Post, summarizes Jewish mystical teachings for an audience of nonspecialists and seekers. Her first five chapters provide an adequate introduction: she walks readers through some of the key kabbalistic texts, and we also meet figures from the history of Kabbalah. Readers will become acquainted with a few central kabbalistic conceptsthat God created and destroyed seven worlds before ours, that creation is ongoing, that God created the universe through ten ``emanations'' or ``forces'' (sefirot). The volume culminates in a final chapter about ``practical Kabbalah.'' Here, Zetter falls down. Ostensibly addressing the relevance Kabbalah has to postmoderns, the book degenerates into holistic pap: ``When we exhibit lovingkindness, we heal the world because acts of lovingkindness bring unification''; ``To experience a Gevurah [strength] consciousness, Kabbalists advise us to examine areas of our life that are out of balance . . . eating too much or watching too much TV . . . . Instead of eating a bag of potato chips for an evening snack, we might want to opt for something healthier.'' Instead of exploring, say, the ways Jews in the Jewish Renewal movement are integrating kabbalistic teachings into their worship services, Zetter ends on a weak note: Random Acts of Kindness with a faintly Jewish flavor. cabalists do it better

Kim Zetter details the estoreric teachings of the Cabala in simple, yet detailed writings. This book is great for the beginner or for anyone looking for some info on the teachings of Cabala because it is very thought-out and informative. I first became interested in Cabala a few years ago. I was riding on a train and started talking to a lady sitting next to me who told me about these wonderful teachings. Unfortunately for me, and for people like me, there weren't many resources besides this book. I have seen and read other books but they were rather complicated and difficult to understand. This book taught me many things. One of the main messages I learned is that no book holds the key to happiness. I do not believe Cabala is a secret answer or cure for anything. Rather it will enhance your life if you invite it in.

A delightful read with clarity that belies its size and page count, Simple Kabbalah is just that. An easy to understand, insightful and educational book on a very intricate and complicated subject. Detailed yet comprehensible, most every aspect of this mystical art is touch upon and illuminated. Though reading this book will not make anyone an expert on Jewish Mysticism, it conclusively dispels many of the misconceptions about Kabbalah and give an excellent historical account of its inceptions and beginnings as well as its current place and posture in today�s world. All objectively and readily. Very well written in concise chapters with excellent illustrations, this is a great place to begin a journey into Kabbalah or to refresh your knowledge of this mystical art. You don�t have to be Jewish and you don�t have to be a scholar to enjoy and learn from this charming little book.

About the Author
Volker K�hn is Assistant Professor, at the Department of Communications Engineering, University of Bremen, Germany. He completed his Ph.D. at the University of Paderborn, Germany (1994-1998). He has also undertaken consultation work for Siemens AG and Infineon Technologies, and is a member of the IEEE.

Highly recommended to RF designers and students

RF design is quite complicated, especially for very high frequency range. ESD is an important concern in RF as it is a tough issue to deal with correctly and it can hurt RF performance if not done perfectly. A book with full coverage on ESD design in RF in advanced technologies is of key interest. This book by Dr. Voldman, a well-known IEEE fellow who has written a series of excellent books in ESD, provides a very rigorous and comprehensive treatment, from device to circuit to co-design to testing, and design methodology. The completeness of coverage is impressive. For example, device physics is becoming more and more important as technologies advance. In this book, physics and mechanisms are explained wherever needed to enhance readers' understanding. The explanations are accurate and easy to follow. There are lots of discussions on architectural level in Chapter 4, which are particularly helpful to the learning of design. Chapters 5 and 8 on bipolar might be optional in a book on digital design, but definitely needed in this book on RF design. Thorough treatment in SiGe (Ch. 6) and GaAs (Ch.7) is hard to find in other books. This book also includes modern approaches and methodologies, especially on computer aided design. I highly recommend this book to engineers and researchers interested in RF or ESD, or both. It serves as a great textbook for students. But even very experienced design engineers would find this book very useful as a learning book and reference guide.

A very good ESD book about RF ESD design

I have already had this book for a while. This one is the third book of the author's ESD book series which cover the most comprehensive topics related to ESD protection comparing with other ESD books. This one is also the only ESD book focusing on RF technology and circuits and it comes at the time when a growing interest is observed in ESD in RF technology and applications. RF ESD design is different and tough. This book gives a clear picture of how the RF ESD design is distinct from the basic ESD design practices, and then tells you how to design ESD protection for different RF applications. It has good amount of examples and plenty of new and updated data points and the latest developments in the field. I also like the way the author expose the reader to the patent art in the ESD field. The more my knowledge grew, the more I have appreciated returning to this book as a reference. I always keep it at hand for my ESD design projects.

Great series for ESD education!

This book, ESD: RF Technology and Circuits, is part of a 3-book series on Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) by the same author (Steven Voldman).

One of the main strengths of this series (and there are very many) is that this is very recently published with new and updated datapoints, not to mention being the only series of ESD textbook. Essentially, this means that all the latest developments in the field is published in an easy-to-understand series.

In this book, Voldman writes about the design of ESD protection circuits for RF designs in his unique style which is illuminating both for experts and beginners alike. ESD design for RF parts is highly complex, and a lot of the tricks and tips needed for high performance protection circuits are collected in this book. I highly recommend this book series to all students of integrated circuit design and ESD.
