There is nothing wrong with psychological defenses. In fact, they help to protect us from emotional injury. But if you cling to the defense mechanisms that were created in your childhood and carry them on into adulthood--as most everyone does unconsciously--your quest for spiritual healing will be thwarted by overwhelming resentments and conflicts.

About the Author
Raymond Lloyd Richmond, Ph.D. holds his doctorate in clinical psychology and is licensed as a psychologist (PSY 13274) in the state of California. Previous to his doctoral degree he earned an M.A. in religious studies, an M.S.E. in counseling, and an M.S. in clinical psychology. He completed a Post-doctoral Fellowship in Health Psychology. During the course of his clinical education he received training in Lacanian psychoanalysis, psychodynamic psychotherapy, hypnosis, and cognitive-behavioral therapy. His clinical experience encompasses crisis intervention; treatment for childhood emotional, physical, and sexual abuse; trauma and PTSD evaluation and treatment; and treatment of psychotic, mood, and anxiety disorders. Dr. Richmond has written and maintains two public-service websites about the practice of clinical psychology; the websites have no user fees or advertising.

Wonderful treasure!

Oh my! If the first edition was rated 5 stars, this book deserves 25 stars! My heart is in my throat, the good doctor writes with overwhelming kindness and compassion. I never heard anything explained with such clear-cut but gentle truth. Sometimes “pruning” feels painful, but everything fits together: not hating others, not hating myself, respecting my body, purity of life, trusting in God. The mysticism of love makes sense now. Searching for happiness doesn’t find healing. If I had this book when younger my life wouldn’t be the big mess it was. Just like the doctor says, my faith was all in my head, I was afraid of honesty with anyone. How we fool ourselves! I feel overjoyed for this treasure of rich spiritual food and already put it to use in my life and my family. We need someone teaching like this. Thank you, thank you, thank you so much!

Good Reading

If you are wounded from addiction or any other kind of life problems, read this bookt. Learned a lot, found it extremely helpful as I have struggled with deep emotional wounds my entire life. so thankful I bought this book. I am leery of paying more than $20 for any book, but the value of this book is much more than that.

Dig out the resentments, the pain, the conflicts that you aren't even aware of, and get them out of the way. Brings together psychology and spirituality, for a total healing process.
