A GREAT READ ON MANY LEVELS

This book was the most pleasant surprise I've had in a while. A lot of the books I buy on Japanese history are rather plain books and, altho interesting, do not excite me.
I cannot tell you if this is a history book, travel guide, food book, comparative religion book or art book. The author explores all those subjects and more. He takes you to a temple and explains what it is, why its there, what the historical significance is and what it looks like. all done in beautifully clever language. I learned more from this book than from any other I have ever read. I particularly appreciate the chapters on Budism, Zen and a good explanation of why the Japanese were so ruthless in WW2. The section alone was well worth the book.
I bought it as a Kindle book and ,as you know if you are a Kindle user, the people at Kindle make no effort to correctly reproduce he printed book accurately. I got the impression with this book that Kindle has a basket somewhere full of words such as "that", "an". "in" and so on. These words they generously sprinkle throughout the manuscript in odd places just to ruin the free flow of words. They also enjoy incomplete sentences so that you'll have to guess what it means.
