So Many Enemies, So Little Time: An American Woman in All the Wrong Places, by Elinor Burkett

At a time when Americans are so riveted by questions about their place in a newly hostile world that they are swearing off air travel, Elinor Burkett does not just take a trip; she takes a headlong dive into enemy territories, crisscrossing back and forth between Ronald Reagan's old Evil Empire and George Bush's new Axis of Evil.

Her adventure begins with her assignment as a Fulbright Professor teaching journalism in Kyrgyzstan, a faded fragment of Soviet might in the heart of Central Asia -- a place of dilapidated apartments, bizarre food and demoralized citizens clinging to the safety of Brother Russia. But when she refuses to join the other expatriates evacuated from the "-stans," it turns into much more. She flies into Afghanistan just as the Taliban are departing, mingles with tense Iraquis watching the gathering storm clouds of an American-led invasion and becomes the target of the resentments of the old comrades of the former Soviet Union. Journeying between Iran and Mongolia, Uzbekistan, China and Vietnam, she confronts old enemies in an era of terrifying new ones.

When she left home, Burkett, a seasoned journalist, wasn't gathering material for a book; she thought she was "taking a vacation from reality." But she emerges with a dazzling political travelogue that will make even the most enlightened reader question what he or she has considered as truth. Whether she's writing about being served goat's head in a Kyrgyz yurt, checking out bowling alleys in Baghdad, avoiding mullahs zooming along on motorbikes in Tehran or simply trying to cook a chicken in her own crumbling apartment, Burkett offers an eclectic series of adventures that are alternately comical, whimsical, poignant and discomfiting.

From Publishers Weekly
"I'm not a danger junkie," Burkett (Another Planet, etc.) declared at the start of her Fulbright year with her husband in Kyrgyzstan on September 18, 2001. In a burst of midlife ennui, the two wanted to move somewhere where she could teach and they could both recharge their cultural batteries. The process of elimination led the pair to this small central Asian republic of the former Soviet Union, advertised as having a "liberal media" and "actively pursuing ethnic tolerance and democratization." When they arrived in Kyrgyzstan, reality overtook them. While appointed to teach "American-style" journalism, Burkett found students so shaped by Stalinist culture, it was all she could do to make them ask questions, much less stir controversy. Unable to resist a little adventure, she and her husband visited Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan. When invited, Burkett hosted forums on the media, which usually turned into brouhahas critiquing potential U.S. intervention in Iraq. In Afghanistan, she met with a series of educated women who'd been terrorized by the Taliban and remained fearful. As Burkett walked in Kabul in her burqa, getting elbowed and bruised by men who "walked down the street as if the women simply weren't there," she decided the struggles in Central Asia were more an attempt by hardcore traditionalists to fight modernization than about religion per se. Few readers would actually want to face a dinner of roasted goat brains or dodge bombs on the highway passing the Tora Bora caves; reading Burkett's snappy, witty account nicely suffices.

From Booklist
Moving to Kyrgyzstan shortly before September 11, journalist Burkett and her husband decided to stay in this predominantly Muslim country despite some very valid initial misgivings. Not only did she opt to remain in Central Asia but she also used the opportunity to travel throughout the region, seeking out both adventure and information in an era of great uncertainty. Burkett's subsequent travelogue is a fascinating first-person account detailing the vagaries of life in a decidedly non-American--and sometimes anti-American--setting. Whether recounting personal experiences or interviewing a diverse cross-section of native Iraqis, Iranians, Afghans, Uzbekistanis, Kazakhstanis, and Kyrgyzstanis, she provides an intimate glimpse into everyday life in nations struggling to establish their own unique post-cold war identities. Interestingly enough, despite the tenuous world situation, she encountered very little blatant hatred directed toward herself as either a woman or an American. Though tourists won't be flocking to this remote and seemingly dangerous comer of the globe, they will appreciate viewing it through the experienced eyes of an intrepid female journalist. Elinor Burkett: Today's Marco Polo
By Laurence Jarvik
Just finished Elinor Burkett's So Many Enemies, So Little Time.

I liked it a lot. It's really a Marco Polo travel diary for today. Burkett provides needed background to world events, in a lively personal style. Fun to read, and you can think about it afterwards, too. The book recounts Burkett's adventures in Kyrgystan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Iraq, Russia, Burma (officially Myanmar), China, Vietnam, and Cambodia during the 2001-2002 events, when she was a Fulbright Scholar. I agree with her view that the Fulbright program is one US government initiative that really works as it was intended. She explains how her view of the world changed after her experience teaching abroad in the wake of 9/11--just the kind of growth experience Senator Fulbright wanted. Burkett has a real gift for noticing the interesting detail. Her description of the little things at her university in Bishkek--such as wandering around the hall trying to find a classroom after being kicked out for some sort of seminar--tracked pretty exactly to my experience at UWED in Tashkent (which I was pleased to see she called the Harvard of Central Asia). Burkett's observations are generally acute, the most telling ones based on her personal confrontations with age-old traditions.

Most of all, I enjoyed Burkett's Kyrgyz anecdotes, which I think reflect a certain mentality--and reality--in the region. Here's a sample:

While walking in the countryside, two Uzbeks and two Kyrgyz fell in a hole. "I'll give you a hand up," the younger Uzbek said to the older. "Then, when you're on solid ground, you can pull me up." The older man agreed, the Uzbeks freed themselves and then went on their way.

The two Kyrgyz men looked at each other grimly, and one began climbing out of the hole on his own. "Hey, you can't do that," yelled the other man, pulling on his companion's legs. "If you get out, I'll be alone and stranded."

The White Princess (The Plantagenet and Tudor Novels), by Philippa Gregory

From “queen of royal fiction” (USA TODAY) Philippa Gregory comes this instant New York Times bestseller that tells the story of the remarkable Elizabeth of York, daughter of the White Queen, and mother to the House of Tudor.

When Henry Tudor picks up the crown of England from the mud of Bosworth field, he knows he must marry the princess of the enemy house—Elizabeth of York—to unify a country divided by war for nearly two decades.

But his bride is still in love with his slain enemy, Richard III—and her mother and half of England dream of a missing heir, sent into the unknown by the White Queen. While the new monarchy can win power, it cannot win hearts in an England that plots for the triumphant return of the House of York.

Henry’s greatest fear is that somewhere a prince is waiting to invade and reclaim the throne. When a young man who would be king leads his army and invades England, Elizabeth has to choose between the new husband she is coming to love and the boy who claims to be her beloved lost brother: the rose of York come home at last.

Guest Review of The White Princess

By Tracy Chevalier

Tracy Chevalier is the New York Times best-selling author of Girl with a Pearl Earring. She was born in Washington, DC but has lived in England all her adult life, and now has dual citizenship. A graduate of the English program at Oberlin College, Ohio, with an MA in creative writing from the University of East Anglia, Norwich, England, she was a reference book editor before turning to writing full-time. She lives in London with her husband and son.

How do you solve a problem like the Princes in the Tower? What does a historical novelist do with Edward and Richard, heirs to the British throne who were purportedly locked in the Tower by their uncle and then disappeared so that he could become Richard III? Conspiracy theories have flourished for centuries, but no strong evidence has emerged to solve the mystery. A novelist has any number of possibilities to pursue.

In The White Queen, the novel that chronologically precedes The White Princess, Philippa Gregory makes her choice and places their fate in the hands of their feisty mother, Elizabeth Woodville, wife of Edward IV and a key player in the War of the Roses, the dynastic feud among the Plantagenets between the Houses of York and Lancaster. She substitutes a pauper for young Richard, ensuring that the Duke of York gets away. The follow-up to such a dramatic decision inevitably needs to continue this story line. Richard has disappeared. Does he come back?

At first, The White Princess seems to tell another story – that of Elizabeth of York, the White Queen’s daughter, and one-time mistress of Richard III, who on his death becomes the wife of his slayer, the Tudor Henry VII. (Confused yet? I am still reeling at the thought that she was mistress to her uncle!) Elizabeth is the embodiment of the painful transition between York and Tudor monarchies, her strategic marriage to Henry VII the outward expression of York loyalty as demanded by the Tudors.

Gregory is known for her retakes on British royal history, viewing the scheming, the power struggles, the battles exclusively from women’s points of view, exploring how the Queen or Princess finds her own source of power and influence in the interstices left open by the men. Elizabeth of York is no different, using her beauty, her popularity with the people, her instinctive wiliness and political acumen to bear on Henry VII, with varying results. She may pragmatically have to accept that the Tudors are in the ascendance, but she can see that her distant and paranoid husband is not a natural as a king; she must teach him how to win the love and respect of his subjects, who still view the family of York with affection and nostalgia.

Eventually Elizabeth and Henry achieve a kind of marital truce, and grow to love each other, if only for a time. There are plenty of beddings, of ladies-in-waiting with knowing looks, of confinements and wet nurses and babies – including, of course, the future Henry VIII, characterized by Gregory even in his boyhood as a sensualist.

Inevitably, however, The White Princess is still the story of men, and specifically of the spectre of the lost princes. Does lost Prince Richard return in the form of pretender to the throne Perkin Warbeck (referred to in the novel most often simply as “the boy”)? Gregory places his identity in Elizabeth’s hands, demonstrating the impossible position she is in: acknowledge the boy as her true brother and bring down her husband and any possibility that her sons might become King, or deny him and see her possible brother executed for treason. In this impossible situation, Elizabeth must tread carefully, and Gregory does an expert job of maintaining this tricky balancing act to the very end. Relishing the personality clashes and political machinations of an insecure Tudor court, she makes the current British royal family, with its crystal-clear line of succession, seem very dull indeed.

From Booklist
Gregory charts the vicissitudes of a high-stakes political marriage in her latest diverting epic. It’s 1485; the Wars of the Roses have ended, but the victorious Henry VII sits insecurely on his throne. Still mourning her lover, Richard III, Princess Elizabeth of York must wed King Henry to unite their warring houses. Unlike his predecessors, Henry has no personal charm, and the novel excels at depicting his paranoia as royal pretenders pop up and threaten England’s stability. Kept ignorant of the political scheming around her and caught between her York relations and securing her children’s inheritance, Elizabeth can’t match the dynamism of her mother, Elizabeth Woodville (The White Queen, 2009), or mother-in-law, Margaret Beaufort (The Red Queen, 2010), and they occasionally steal the spotlight. Nonetheless, the younger Elizabeth is an observant narrator, and her difficult position reflects historical reality, as does her growing closeness to her beleaguered husband. The repetitive language will either drive points home for readers or drive them batty, but the novel is as replete with intrigue and heartrending drama as Gregory’s fans expect. --Sarah Johnson

So disappointing
By Susan Johnson
Let me start by saying that I enjoy Phillippa Gregory's books. I do think her Cousins series is weaker than her Tudor series but it's still enjoyable. It's nice to read how women have influenced history with their limited powers. But this book was drivel. It was like reading a National Enquirer version of Henry VII's life.

The book debunks any idea that Henry deserved to be King. He is portrayed as weak. unlikable, clueless as a leader, a mother's boy and a rapist. That's just the beginning. Apparently the only thing he does in his reign is to execute people horribly, tax the people to excess and lock people in the Tower. He is driven mad by seeing everyone as an enemy and continually looking for the Lost Princes.

Don't think Elizabeth comes out nicely in this version. She is supposedly madly in love with her uncle, King Richard. Uck uck. Still devastated by his death, she is hurriedly made ready to marry the man who dethroned and killed her lover. He rapes her repeatedly and yet she falls in love with him.

Please strain my creditability a little farther. OK, here is goes. She and her mother put a curse on the killer of her brothers last seen in the Tower. Here's the curse- the person who killed them will have their oldest son die and then the oldest grandson. Their line will end with a female. Really?

I cannot recommend this book at all. There's plenty of good things to read but this isn't one of them.

AN INTRIGUING LOOK AT THE COURT OF KING HENRY VII AND HIS QUEEN, ELIZABETH OF THE HOUSE OF YORK...
By lawyeraau
First and foremost, readers should remember that this is historical fiction not history, per se. This is the story of Henry Tudor, who got his crown and became King Henry VII of England by defeating King Richard lIl of the house of York at the battle of Bosworth. He soon marries Princess Elizabeth of the house of York, daughter of King Edward IV and his wife, Queen Elizabeth. He does so to give his kingship stability and unite England. Unfortunately, the best laid plans often go awry.

Not much is known about the women of that era, other than the basics: birth, marriage, children, and death. So, here the author tries to make the women three dimensional. The author also weaves a narrative on the women's take of the events of the day. It is certainly an intriguing tapestry that the author weaves. While at times the book is a bit repetitive, it is still an entertaining work of historical fiction. Fans of the author will not be disappointed.

Not what I expected.
By SassyDree
I was dying to read this book, since I have enjoyed the Tudor Series and now the Cousins' War. I wanted to love Elizabeth as much as I enjoyed the other protagonists, even the "Red Queen", but I just couldn't believe that a woman raised by Elizabeth Woodville, would not try to use her influence on Henry VII. To me, she was not strong like her mother, but weak and whiny. Ok, there are some justified reasons why she despised him before they were married, but afterward, it doesn't even occur to her to use the same magic on him as her mother did on Edward IV. And yes, I realize that his mother was domineering, but she was in a position to give Henry the love and affection that he craved. It was as if she suddenly forgot how to use her sexuality, when it was implied that she sure as heck used it with Richard III.

It was still a good book, there were moments when I was heartbroken for the royal couple's awkward marriage, and times I was joyful that maybe they found peace with one another. But, the constant paranoia was overwhelming and made me anxious, I felt like I had to rush through the book to find something happy again. Then with the introduction of Katherine Huntley, I was just as devastated and annoyed as Elizabeth, but again, she did nothing, but accepts karma.

I guess, I expected so much more from the daughter of Elizabeth Woodville and the mother of Henry VIII.

About the Author
Upton Sinclair was born in Baltimore in September 1878. His father moved the family to New York City in 1888. Although his own family was extremely poor, he spent periods of time living with his wealthy grandparents. He later argued that witnessing these extremes turned him into a socialist. Sinclair funded his college education by writing stories for newspapers and magazines. Sinclair s first novel was published in 1901. Sinclair was extremely active in socialist politics throughout his life. His novel "Dragon s Teeth" (1942) on the rise of Nazism won him the Pulitzer Prize. By the time Upton Sinclair died in 1968, he had published more than ninety books.

Great start, but let me down
By L. Grenville
I was intrigued by the title, author, and, frankly, the free download and the prospect of making a discovery. The first half of the book really engaged me so much that I was sure that I wanted my wife to read it immediately after I finished. King Midas is a turn of the 20th century upper-class period piece a la James and Wharton with very sympathetic characters, initially highly absorbing plot-situations and a lovely lyrical style with many classical music and Romantic German poetic allusions. I initially felt that this was a highly readable and terrific undiscovered prize.
Unfortunately at about the halfway point, Sinclair, for me, seems to lose inspiration and control as his main character becomes preachy and ponderous, at truly undue length, on his theories of religion and love and duty -frankly, after a while, tedious. The denouement becomes overheated, melodramatic and a little desperate; the final pages seem something of a disappointing copout. However, the first half absolutely engaged me for which I certainly recommend your, perhaps, giving King Midas a go.

Totally unlike anything Sinclair usually writes but it is a great story of love and decency and what doing the right thing can do to change your life.

Well written, but far from brilliant
By ServantofGod
Dont know whether I had read too many books of this kind or what, I cant remember much from this, except the impression of its being a short, easy reading, or even interesting self improvement book with strong emphasis on positive thinking, NLP and "massive immediate action". I am sure that people who seldom read self help books can learn much from it. However, for veterans who read regularly and keep on fighting against procrastination or simply inaction, satisfaction is not guaranteed.

Nevertheless, below please find some of my favorite points for your reference.

The right people turn up at the right time - so keep your eyes open. You never know, the person sitting opposite you on the train, or that friend of a friend could hold the answer to so many questions in your life. But if you dont talk to them, you'll never know. pg xv

Here is a list of some classics and some new language:
I'm bored vs This could be more interesting
I'm pissed off vs I could be happier
I'm scared vs I could be more confident
I'm freezing vs It could be warmer
This is a crap vs This could be better pg 30

Dont be most people! pg 40

When you create a goal in the present tense, your brain says "OK, if that's how things have to look, sound and feel, what do I have to do to make that happen now?" This is why a goal will happen so much faster if you set it in the present tense. pg 56

The only way of moving forward is to be aware of the things that are holding you back. pg 86

Five frongs were sitting on a log. One decides to jump off; how many are left? The answer is five. Why? Because the frog only decided to jump off. It didnt actually schedule the jump time and stick to it! pg 137

When a rocket leaves the launch pad on a trip to the moon, it uses 95 per cent of its energy in the first 3 minutes. It's the initial push that is needed to break through. The same can be said of a pursuit of brilliance. pg 142

It's not the lack of resources but the lack of resourcefulness that most people suffer from. pg 155

Good be not Brilliant
By Kug
I'm an avid reader of these kinds of books but found this one to be a bit of a redux of others books. Not that its bad, it has a good order and practicality to it but its like so many others with stop the negative attitudes, be positive, focus ... dont get the ninety day thing but maybe its just me. From Booklist
Impeccably illustrated in full color, this beautiful book is perfect for adventurous cooks who like to do it all from scratch, though there is also an excellent guide to the many types of dried pasta available. The pages lovingly devoted to making fresh pasta, whether cut by knife or machine, contain directions so clear that even a novice can follow them; however, it may take an expert to master Cantonese noodles. Next come the recipes, a wide array of both Italian and Asian, ranging from the simple and relatively inexpensive (fresh tomato sauce and pasta served with various vegetables or meats) to the more complicated and costly (made with truffles, lobster, or whole fish). Stir-fry it, stuff it, bake it, put it in soup, or serve it sweetened for dessert--this truly is an inspirational treasure trove, and the anecdotal history of pasta and its traditions worldwide is a bonus.
